Comment Late Stage Facebook (Score 1) 106

They know they are not winning over the younger generations so they are looking to milk their existing audience as much as possible. These AI bots are going to be used to 'entertain' and retain our dementia-ridden elders long after everyone has given up on Facebook as a social media platform. Even modern-day AOL will look more like an honest service in comparison.

The first gmail account I ever created during the invitation-only period was frankjr@gmail.com. Not even google's spam filters can filter out the sheer amount of garbage that gets sent to it. People assume it exists and it gets spammed to. Had to switch over to something people wouldn't automatically assume exists and only ever peep into that account once every couple of years.

Prime Video never drew me in because of the limited selection and everything being an upsell. Dropped Prime and while I don't get two-day shipping anymore I was basically just paying them for the privilege of spending even more money with them. Harder to impulse buy when it's going to be a week or more before you get it.

Hrm, most men in my age group (35-40) and even a couple of women I know build or have built their own systems before. Everyone I know who plays games on the PC has built one. We're not the majority, but most of the marketing seems to be aimed at us and while I couldn't verify it one statistic shows 19% of the PC gaming market in 2019 is custom built machines.

They are not friends of the free software world, but enemies. If they actually cared about Linux they would not be continually keeping us out of the Blu-ray world completely by their insane DRM schemes. The only reason Sony ever cared about putting user-programmable (and somewhat to highly crippled, I might add) parts on their consoles is to get tax benefits in Europe for selling a 'computer' and not a 'gaming device,' of which the European countries did not find to be a convincing line of argument. As for me, I won't be supporting a company whose policies help keep Linux crippled and out of the mainstream.

PHP Gets Namespace Separators, With a Twist 523

jeevesbond writes "PHP is finally getting support for namespaces. However, after a couple hours of conversation, the developers picked '\' as the separator, instead of the more popular '::'. Fredrik Holmström points out some problems with this approach. The criteria for selection were ease of typing and parsing, how hard it was to make a typo, IDE compatibility, and the number of characters."
Security

World of Warcraft's Brand New Rootkit 576

Captain Kirk writes "We all know that World of Warcraft has checked for hacks to ensure a safe game environment for all players. The latest version of these checks goes beyond anything seen so far in that what is being checked is now completely encrypted. Obviously this hits bot writers as can be seen from these complaints, But it also strikes at the privacy of all users. Now Blizzard has a tool that is encrypted and can run any type of scan, transfer any file or edit any document on your computer. That can't be right."

madgreek writes: "Here is a short story about my switch to Ubuntu from XP at work. I have been Microsoft free for 3 months now at a Microsoft heavy shop. Few people know I am using Open Office and Linux. I create countless documents that people open using Word, Excel, PPT and nobody can tell that they were created using Open Office. http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/eai/madgreek/archives/o pen-source-and-microsoft-free-17339"
