Comment Re:What about privacy? (Score 0) 117

Your hypothetical is pretty far-fetched. This isn't access to an external database that allows private information to be accessed by anyone. This is only mechanical data transferred to and from the vehicle in question, only after permission is granted. From the information on the ballot:

"

With vehicle owner authorization, independent repair facilities (those not affiliated with a manufacturer) and independent dealerships would be able to retrieve mechanical data from, and send commands to, the vehicle for repair, maintenance, and diagnostic testing."

Ballot Information

This doesn't include a database hosted on a server somewhere. This is only between the car and the diagnostic device, and only after authorization. The auto industry is trying to push this as a privacy concern, and even went so far as to create a dark TV ad of a woman being in danger of being attacked because her personal information was accessed. This is entirely untrue, because these systems will only have mechanical data.

Ask Slashdot: Building an Assistive Reading Device? 134

RulerOf writes "A few years ago, my girlfriend's grandfather was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Ever since, he has had progressively more trouble with daily activities. While his wife and family are able to help him with most things, at the age of 88 and without many living friends left, he dearly misses the ability to read printed text. He was able to get by for some time with magnifying glasses and other basic aids but now even those do not help. Recently, a local clinic which specializes in treatment for low-sight and blind individuals made him aware of and showed him several assistive reading devices that successfully allowed him to read. He mentioned this to his family members, and when I was told about it, I thought that these devices sounded like they were not much more than a camera attached to an LCD monitor or television with a little bit of special software thrown into the mix." Thanks for writing this. I'm an avid cyclist and have been for over 25 years, and I rarely realize how much I take my ability to do the simple things for granted. I'm really happy you've regained the mobility to enjoy life more. It's given me a "realize and shift" moment as well as enabled me to rethink my one-sided (and admittedly somewhat childish) visions of where these types of medical advancements might take us.

First Google Voice App Hits the App Store 95

silverpig writes "The first Google Voice app has hit the app store, and it's called GV Connect. Providing a front end to the Google Voice service, GV Connect allows users of devices running Apple iOS platform to have a native app with which to interact with Google Voice. What will be interesting to note is the order that these apps are approved in. I know Sean Kovacs was first out with GV Mobile back before Apple banned Google Voice, and while he is in the approval pipeline, this other app has some first mover advantage. I wonder what it means when Google gets their app officially approved, as surely it'll be free."

I've seen this argument a lot. Well, maybe not "drive like drunk", exactly, but there are piles of articles like this about how drivers using cell phones, even with hands-free setups, are worse drivers overally.

But what I don't see much difference in, and wish to be corrected if I'm wrong, is having a hands-free cell phone conversation while driving and having a conversation with someone in the car while driving.
