Slashdot Interviews an Oxford Vaccine Trial Participant 80

Jennifer Riggins is participating in the Oxford Vaccine Trial. She's an American technology journalist and marketer who's self-employed in London — and she's also agreed to answer some questions from Slashdot!

Slashdot: Can you give me any details on what it's like when you go in for your shots? (Like, are they somber, or enthusiastic...?) Do you chat at all? Do they know you by name?

JR: For sure they know me by name, at least after glancing at charts or if I call the hotline. The doctors and nurses don't know which dose I got — this COVID vaccine or the placebo which is the meningitis vaccine. It's their job to make me feel comfortable so I stay volunteering and they can get as much info from me (like about reactions) as they can.

It's actually a lot of fun for me. I love the medical talk and ask loads of questions and they are totally transparent and kind.

Plus working from home with my also full-time-working husband and our three year old during the pandemic, a surprise benefit is a bit of me time including the hour-long walk to hospital each way.

Slashdot: Have you ever made contact with any of the other participants?

JR: Just a nod "hello" here and there. No one I've seen chats like me — ha. But also we are kept far apart because, you know, pandemic.

And Jennifer had a lot more to say about her experience, the rewards, the reactions, and the media coverage of it all...

Yes, this is and more than you think. Please note that I'm a liberal by some standards so I should not write that.... But... Some strong flu come and our civilization is coming into lockdown. This is a proof that courage is a value that must be reinstated into society. And I beleive the current "Me Too" and others won't do good with that. In fact by creating a sort of "Victim Pride" it is making things worse. The message is not "it's good to be a winner" but "if you are not a victim, wether women, gay, transgender, black or latino) you are not interested. So everybody start behaving like victims. There is COVID we are gonna die ! At some point, even if there are some points I love in a liberal society (I have nothing against gay, blacks, and foreigners and beleive they do bring something to society), I'm starting to think that this victim culture is creating more harm than good even if it brings a few good points. And it need to be changed urgently. I mean even if that means loosing on some aspect, we can't maintain a cowardice society. Economicaly I'm doing fine as my business is not affected. Let me make something clear. I don't want to pay any taxes for people who wanted a lockdown. If they go in economic hell I don't care. Cowards may be victims of their cowardice but they deserve their victim status. Yes, on the economic side I'm more conservative than liberal. That's true. But in the end, I did consent to pay taxes for people who might have been wronged by life as long as they were not total scums. But with the lockdowns, let's be clear, there will be too much people to help and many of them did lock themselves down voluntarily. If you wanted to lock yourself down because you were at a real risk of covid (elderly or with a real medical condition) then you deserve help. If you lock youself down while being healthy you are a coward, and your cowerdice should not be rewarded. Go eat noodles and may be next time you'll be brave. If you are a victim of the governement crazyness (your store was closed by governement mandate) then you may be deserving help but I fear there maybe too much of you for others to survive. And you maybe more useful by wrathing your despair against cowards politicians that landed you there. At war a general who is a coward and orders his troops to be should be executed and if possible tried and put in infamy. Like France's Pétain, but Macron is next since he ordered a lockdown. So go against the politicians that put you into lockdowns and maybe you'll earn something. So Liberals who love Combat Helicopters will cry. By the way how does it feel to have the choice between Trump and someone with accusations of sexual harassements ? This whole "mee too" thing should go down the drain. And while the religious right sucks big time maybe some cowards should have religious education about death. Maybe they'll be more brave after this.

He resigned in the middle of one of the worst economic crisis in history. He may think he will find a good job quickly but he also may not. A lot of talented people will be out of job, not because they were bad but because their company sank. So there will be competition. Now if I'm a boss I can tell you something. The guy who protested against firings, the idealist are people I don't want as employee. So if I have another option, I will hire someone else. There will be other options and this man may feel totally stupid for having not taken one milllion dollar and having abandonned his job. I may beleive in their vaccine because I have reason to beleive vaccine do work BUT I don't trust the medicals pro anymore. I'm even close to considering some of them like WHO as ennemy of the human race that should be tried for ordering the lockdowns for crime against humanity. We need a Nurenberg for the lockdowns. We need it fast before these cowards enforce a second lockdown. We need not to fear anymore because THESE people are worse than the virus. Coronavirus might have been bad since it's a really bad flu without a vaccine (and if we had no vaccine for the flu you would see a lot more death every year) but what they have done with the lockdown is a way to destroy our countries and civilizations when MD started to act as cowards. There should be no excuse for that. No lockdowns, People who favored lockdowns on trial, and maybe we will have reasons to trust you again.

In previous national emergencies, like the World Wars, Cowards were shot. That's unfortunate, but too much people are treating COVID like something far more dangerous than it is. If you are in working age and in good health, you have very few chance of dying. It is not zero but it is low. So you should continue your life and catch it so that weak people can be protected quickly by herd immunity. People who strike are doing a disservice both to the economy and against herd immunity. Btw, the fastest I can go back to a bar, and party, the better we are. (Maybe I got it, maybe not, I don't know. Yes China took control of the coronavirus. But there was a price to pay and the communists did not realize it. Shutting down a whole country costs an insane lot of money. It will also destroy lives. The country is under lockdown. Many companies don't earn money for more than a month. Some people are unemployed as a result. Imagine if all US companies took no money for a month ? It would be the worst recession in the history of the US. One month = 8% of GDP. Many companies will go bankrupt and the supply chain inside China will be severely distrubed leading to other collapses in a chain reaction. Coronavirus will be a nail in Xi Jinping's coffin. It's a pyrrus victory. He won against the coronavirus but inflected so much domage to China's economy that historians will wonder how such a marvellous civilisation on track to be the world first power managed to collapse in a few month without any gunshot fired. In the meantime Pangolinitis seems to be a "big flu" that kills mostly the elderly. As bad as it is other world powers may escape relatively unharmed from this. In fact fallout from China economic collapse will be the biggest problem. Info : I know China quite well and I can tell you something. The collapse won't be an orderly affair. Once the process start and ordinary chinese understand their money and standard of living was just a mirage it is going to be every man for himself.

Getting a certification / diploma, whatever prestigious is a path to disaster in a career. I know a lot of people who went in somewhat good MBA and yet failed. Not because their MBA sucked, but because they didn't knew why they did it. Wanting a "nice career" is NOT a path or a project. A lot of these certification just find people who stagnate and tell them, "Sign up, do it, and you'll be a manager earning XXX". But if your only reason is "my career is stagnating and I want a boost", then keep clear and invest the money instead (in stocks or real estate or whatever investment). On the other hand if you have a project in mind which is clear to you, then you can find a certification / diploma that will help you achieve it. The diploma doesn't count at all. It's what you learn and who you'll network with. I'll give you an example, two friends from the same prestigious european MBA : One did it with a purpose. When they had meetings with C-level executives doing talks, he was able to express his project and got hired with a big salary. The other did it because her career stagnated and she hoped a boost from the MBA. At the end, she went back to her former employer at the same position and with a lot less money in the bank (and new friends). She was given the same opportunities than the other friend, but was unable to leverage them. So don't do a certification, a MBA and any other diploma because you'll get more money / a better career. But if you do want to acquire project management skills and this certs seems a good way to learn them, then do it. If it's only to be able to display PMP after your name on linkedin, think about what you want to do next.

No, you enter the industry when young. Then either you prove yourself very good (and you are in premiere league so you better really be amazing) or they dispose of you. It's like a long trial period. And like in football, a lot of people want to work in tech. But very few will remain in the field after the trial. In other fields, school is supposed to have prepared you. Since most school don't teach you to create technology, then the first years at companies is your training. Either you are good at it, or you're out. And most of us will be out at some point.

Comment Most tech employees are not techies (Score 1) 474

Think I know why. Personally very satisfied with my IT job (but not living in the US). But I wanted to do computer science and got what I wanted. I see a lot of collegues even at good companies (including some people working at Google in California) that went into IT through a life accident. It was bright, they were promised fame and money, and they got in. Guess what ? It didn't work out exactly like that. First they discovered that tech hierarchy is essentially flat. While at most jobs you might go up the corporate ladder with a lot of steps (you don't gain that much power but you can say you were promoted), Tech company have like 4 levels of hierarchy. So either, you stand out or you'll stay at the start. To stand out, you have to "live, breathe and eat this stuff" (seen at an industry tradeshow). And on top of that, you need social skills. If you are not able to "eat live and breath this stuff", don't come into IT. If you love this but don't have social skills, you'll have to be really amazing. The focus on efficiency as a core value means that if you are not really good, you'll be treated as "replacable". Second, you might be considered a wizard in your hometown, but once you are in "premiere league", then you are just a developper. And you might not be as good as you previously tought. Every kid, knowing how to use a computer used to be venerated as "a genius". And well, it wasn't that hard to fix a computer. If you come working at Google, Twitter or any other tech company either you are very good and will work on prime stuff or you'll be paid to refactor code or other menial tasks. At all tech companies, you have the elite who define the infrastructure, they are very few, very well paid, and usually happy. But if you're not good enough to do that, you end up, using infrastructure other developped or worse, as a code janitor. Then, there's the value stuff. Well these companies do have values. They are those of the technical society (read Jacques Ellul to know better) which means : No values escept efficiency. Or, if it's more efficient, do it regardless of the consequences. I know more than one people at Google that were not easy with this. Most of them were outsiders from the tech fields. And they quickly were not at ease when they discovered when discussing with senior level people who where in transhumanist or other kind of geek dreams. In these companies either you dream if changing the world by making it more efficient or you are not considered to have a leading mindset. This is not a written set of values of course, but it is essentially that : Uber does not make it for values, or even money, they target the most efficient way to change the taxi industry. And it will take what it takes to achieve it. Society however favors people who make things efficient, so you get money doing it even if you are not after money. That's why you have companies with no business models : They know if they make things more efficient, money will come, so money is not a goal. Humanistic values are not a goal either. If you find pleasure in solving problems, making things efficient and watching how powerful you are then tech work is for you. If not, you should avoid tech companies. NB : And the worst is working in tech for a non tech company, then nobody understand nobody.
