Journal fractaltiger's Journal: Job interview... 100% packet loss 4
- I have a follow-up interview on tuesday that I need to get ready for, since they'll get technical this time. The title is LAN assistant but what they really want is a PHP coder who can do helpdesk --and then maintain the LAN. They make it seem like it will be prioritized backwards to that, but the interview was rigged in a very specific way. Instead of asking me about routers and switches they ask about troubleshooting and written SQL code. That wasn't even on their *very detailed* government job description. But they pay well and it is great to switch from helpdesk to LANs. Any comments?
- People still believe that when I'm on my own I'm not really doing anything. Reading (Comp sci research on programming and jobs,) writing code, or watching TV are things that stop noone around me from interrupting me as much as they like. I have to tape every show I watch to make sure I won't miss plot points. In my case, part of the problem is cultural and part of it is anti-geek-rejection, but people with one such 'problem' usually get pinned by it. And I have both. I told a friend that I'm so busy with 'foreign requests' [and let's add family's 'core dumps'] that I couldn't ping my own brain.

I'm confident that even if I didn't get in, their business offer has helped me improve. I've expanded my skills to include network management for theirs or future offers.
Yeah, customer support requires patience and giving more than what you could to satisfy people. I started out in college by looking at others who knew what they were doing. You do get to see lots of different hardware and what people are using / sharing / destroying the most.
