Call me stupid, but how are you going to see if the md5sum of a remote webpage is still the same - apart from getting the page and calculating the md5 that is ? moreover, IMNSHO a webserver is best placed to determine for how long a page should be considered "valid" - ie. Expiration-date headers are really the right thing to do.
