You want to encourage people to use Linux? Great - do so with one-on-one discussions and careful mentoring.

STOP FORCING IT ONTO PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT IT!

Thank you for making that loud and clear. Although the Linux kernel and its various distributions are all great options. No single flavour satisfies all tastes. So, each OS has its place. Unfortunately, there will be an ever waging battle of compatibility, but the non-M$FT side has made a rousing comeback in recent years. The end result: There is never just one solution to a complex problem.

To be continued on some Linux forum in greater detail...

Comment Electric Bike (Score 1) 887

In downtown Toronto walking is a great option, but by taking my electric bicycle I can reduce the amount of time spent in the cold by 30%. Also, depending on the destination, the TTC (public transit for Toronto) can be less than practical. Finally, with minimum wage at $8.75, and the cost of the TTC at $2.75 each way, it is sometimes hard to justify nearly an hours worth of pay, just to get there. Thus, I will continue to ride my Electric Bicycle.

New 4GB Flash Drive Packs Quite a Punch 119

PCPro has a neat little tidbit about a new flash drive from Corsair. This little drive, only half the size of a lighter, packs a punch with 4GB of data storage and a very reasonable price tag (approx $32 USD). "When a Corsair rep turned up at Dennis Towers yesterday he told us he'd brought something pretty special to show off. We were therefore distinctly underwhelmed when he said it was ... a flash drive. But this flash drive needs seeing to be believed. It's been passed all round the office, where it's invariably been greeted with ooohs and aaaahs of grinning appreciation."

Gartner Reveals Top 10 Technologies For Next 4 Years 163

Dr. Jim writes "The good folks over at the Gartner Group have revealed the top 10 technologies that they believe will change the world over the next four years. The usual suspects including multi-core chips, virtualization, and cloud computing are on the list. Multicore servers and virtualization will mean that firms will need fewer boxes, and apps can be easily moved from box to box (and right out the door to an outsourced data center). Workplace social networks and cloud computing means that the need for a centralized IT department will go away. Firms will no longer need to own/maintain the boxes that they use to run their firm's apps. With no need to touch a box, there will be no need to have the IT staff co-located with the boxes."
