Chip Allows Blind People To See 231

crabel writes "3 blind people have been implanted with a retinal chip that allowed them to see shapes and objects within days of the procedure. From the article: 'One of the patients surprised researchers by identifying and locating objects on a table; he was also able to walk around a room unaided, approach specific people, tell the time from a clock face, and describe seven different shades of gray in front of him.'"

Generally a bad practice. Host...I definitely recommend using a Linux server solution. Windows has problems with both security and file upload permissions depending on how good or bad the admin is. I have used quite a few LAMP hosts. LiquidWeb.com has been best so far. They say that they offer "legendary support" and I have found that to be true. Don't worry about moving the site later...it's not as big a deal as it seems. You will never find a host that offers everything. Find a package that fits for where you are now and move when you need to. Use strong passwords and change them every few months...one year tops. There have been exploits lately that take advantage of stupid passwords and passwords that have not been changed. Change the password when you start the account. Usually the pw is transmitted in a plain text email. Make sure you can install a SSL cert. You will likely want to have a backend that is password protected and secure. You may also want to have secure front end pages. Make sure you have control over backups of your site. You will likely NOT want to download the backups through your ISP connection...too slow. If you can do a backup from one computer to another at your host it will move quickly. I would personally stay away from the cloud. This is based on a bad experience with Media Temple. There may be some good cloud servers out there but I get a sense that they are generally a tad slow. I have more to say but that's all I should put here.

US Air Force Buying Another 2,200 PS3s 144

bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" According to the Justification Review Document (DOC), "Once the hardware configuration is implemented, software code will be developed in-house for cluster implementation utilizing a Linux-based operating software."

Me too! I think that any backup plan is a failure if it depends upon human intervention once set up. Backuppc happens automatically and has saved my bacon. Also you can set it to run when network traffic is low. One last thing...I believe that I am right here when I say that it pools files across users. That is...if two different users backup the same file it only stores one copy of the file and then places a symlink to that single file. Some users are reporting a backup pool of 1/10 in size compared to the number of files actually backed up. I have 3-4 users on my network and I think my backup pool is 85% smaller than if the identical files were saved redundantly.

Submission + - Windows 95 Almost Autodetected Floppy Disks 1

bonch writes: Windows 95 almost shipped with a technique for detecting whether a floppy disk was inserted without spinning up the drive. Microsoft's floppy driver developer discovered a sequence of commands that detected a disk without spinup--unfortunately, unspecified behavior in the floppy hardware specification meant that half the drives worked one way and half the other, each giving opposite results for the detection routine. Microsoft considered a dialog prompting the user to insert a disk to 'train' the routine, but the idea was scrapped.

Vote Now For Miss Nuclear Reactor 2009 4

Russia has come up with a great idea to improve the image of their nuclear industry, a beauty pageant. Each of the 200 participants in the "Miss nuclear reactor 2009" contest are connected in some way to the nuclear power business. The only problem I see is figuring out which of the winner's heads to put the crown on.

$50,000 Claim Filed Over Girl's Time-out In School 11

A $50,000 lawsuit alleges that Greenfield Middle School teachers falsely imprisoned a girl when she was put in a time-out room, and that the experience caused the girl to hyperventilate, feel nauseous, and understand that some actions are unacceptable. Greenfield Superintendent Conrad Farner said he could not respond specifically to the allegations, in order to protect the privacy of the student, but said,"I'm confident that the district has acted in an appropriate manner and will continue to do so."

Men Warned About Knockout Boob Bandits 8

It seems that thieves in Uganda have taken a novel new approach to their business. A gang of robbers have been using women with chloroform smeared on their chests to knock their victims unconscious. "They apply this chemical to their chest. We have found victims in an unconscious state. You find the person stripped totally naked and everything is taken from him, and the victim doesn't remember anything. He just remembers being in the act of romancing," Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) spokesman Fred Enanga said. Now that the thieves have this new boob technology they will be virtually unstoppable.
