Comment The pathology of cheaters (Score 5, Interesting) 88

Being an accomplished cheater takes practice. A successful cheater is devious, skilful, and experienced.

People who cheat as adults probably do not start cheating as adults - much the same as more serious criminal offending often has its roots in childhood behaviours and related traumas.

People think that children grow-out of behaviours, but in fact, unless corrected, children turn into adults that have grown-in to behaviours that tend to become more problematic over time.

The trigger for cheating in childhood may be inability to accept losing (usually related to stunted emotions), excessive parental pressure to win at all costs, or a variety of other factors (or more likely a combination of such). Thus, we can see that cheating is usually related to complex psychopathology that is easy to view in simple terms by those who are not themselves cheats. Such psychopathology tends to be deep-seated and not amenable to change.

Whilst it is not fair to say, "once a cheat, always a cheat", neither is it wise to assume that a cheater has been reformed.

Submission + - New York City proposes new rules for Airbnb starting in January (marketwatch.com)

quonset writes: A proposal by New York City to tighten rules for Airbnb and other such short-term renters is set to take effect in January.

Among the proposed changes is the person renting out their apartment must certify they are the owners and provide documentation to this effect.

Hosts also will be required to list the “full legal name of all permanent occupants of the dwelling” as well as their relationship to the host. They also will have to provide their leases if they are renting and to certify that they understand all the zoning requirements, building code regulations and other issues associated with “multiple dwelling law,” according to the 30-page document.

For its part, Airbnb gave a rather odd response considering part of New York City's housing shortage is directly related to such short-term rentals:

“The bill passed by the DeBlasio administration, as interpreted by the Office of Special Enforcement, will create a draconian and unworkable registration system that will prevent lawful and responsible hosts from listing their homes at a time when New York families are navigating the rising cost of living,” an Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement.

I thought I would try it for the novelty factor.

Went to download, only... they demanded my email address, for which, in return, I would not even get to download it, but rather they would let me know when it's "my turn".

I won't ever be giving them a second chance.

The Australian government is finalising a review into privacy laws.

Optus has repeatedly opposed more stringent privacy laws in formal submissions.

The new Australian government will not wish to appear weak on this front - if they were not already planning to strengthen laws (and I suspect that they were), then they certainly will be now. Emboldened by the Optus leak, they may go even further than originally planned, knowing that business will be reluctant to publicly attack any such reforms in the wake of the Optus scandal.

Still, having hinted at so much, the not-quite-accuser would do well to deliver-up some proof, lest he be seen as simply a poor loser.

Comment What is the expected support lifetime for games? (Score 2) 62

Many comments here would suggest that it should be in perpetuity, but surely that is not realistic or sustainable.

What factors warrant the maintenance of game server infrastructure?

Surely the correct answer involves some kind of calculation involving length of service vs active user base on the one hand and maintenance costs vs revenue on the other hand?
