The Economy of Online Crime 119

hdtv writes "You might call the thugs or thieves, but on their own closed forums and referral-only Web sites, they value honesty and reputation. Fortune magazine looks into the black market for stolen credit card numbers and identities. What's interesting is that so few of the criminals retrieve their information via breaking into online stores." From the article: "Gaffan says these credit card numbers and data are almost never obtained by criminals as a result of legitimate online card use. More often the fraudsters get them through offline credit card number thefts in places like restaurants, when computer tapes are stolen or lost, or using 'pharming' sites, which mimic a genuine bank site and dupe cardholders into entering precious private information. Another source of credit card data are the very common 'phishing' scams, in which an e-mail that looks like it's from a bank prompts someone to hand over personal data."

A Dolphin By Any Other Name 248

SloppyElvis writes "CNN is reporting that scientists have proven that Dolphins can communicate with each other by name. From the article: 'researchers synthesized signature whistles with the caller's voice features removed and played them to dolphins through an underwater speaker' to which the mammals responded. This form of identification in language was previously only known to exist in the human world." Thankfully they still haven't evolved opposable thumbs.

First Steps Toward Artificial Gravity 470

CompaniaHill writes "Have scientists been able to artificially generate a gravitational field? Researchers at the European Space Agency believe so. "Small acceleration sensors placed at different locations close to the spinning superconductor, which has to be accelerated for the effect to be noticeable, recorded an acceleration field outside the superconductor that appears to be produced by gravitomagnetism. This experiment is the gravitational analogue of Faraday's electromagnetic induction experiment in 1831." The effect is very small, so don't expect to see it used in spacecraft any time soon. But the effect is still many times larger than the predictions of Einstein's theories. "If confirmed, this would be a major breakthrough," says [Austrian researcher Martin] Tajmar. "It opens up a new means of investigating general relativity and it consequences in the quantum world.""

Journal Journal: How to get the most out of your mod points -- Part II 2

10. Never mod up posts that attempt to shift the topic at hand into a classic flame war. Take an article about Microsoft improving a product. A post of this type would sayg that MS is only making this improvement to drive their competitors out of business. This post will only lead to a bitch session about Microsoft's unethical business tactics and nothing about the original topic. While there are exceptions to this rule, try to mod up posts that you find novel or funny and not just w

Journal Journal: How to get the most out of your mod points 8

These are my thoughts on how to use your mod points effectively:

1. Look first to moderate up good posts at +1 or +2-- if a post gets to +3, far more people will read it than at +2... Most people don't set display limit higher than +3 unless there are multiple pages of posts. In that case, look first to mod up the good +3 posts. This will make your mod points the most effective.
