First of all, the 'atomic' clock is in Colorado, not in Washington, at the NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) and it's based on the very reliable decay of Cesium. NIST broadcasts a signal that is used by other timepieces to keep in sync. I know because my very cheap Casio Wave watch gets the signal every morning at 1:00 AM and resets itself. I then use that to reset all my other watches and clocks, if necessary. Accurate to a fraction of a second over a million years. Too bad the watch is only programmed internally up to 2007.
