Exactly—the original ProjectZero post expressed a desire to move past discussion of the million dollar dissident—which I take to mean the idea that highly sophisticated zero day exploits are only worth using in targeted attacks, both because of the cost of development and the opportunity cost when the hack is inevitably exposed and expended. But the updated news shows that’s exactly what this is—China is highly motivated against perceived threats to national unity, and by focusing the attack they could prolong its lifetime before discovery. Security against a superpower is a completely different magnitude compared to what most people should worry about.
