"Make it bigger" and "do it better" are two very different concepts, and when mapped against political landscape, the best STEM programs map strongly toward staunchly liberal states (and where divergent, like Georgia, Florida, and Texas, are still bastions of minority opinion).
It would appear to me that the problem for modern conservatism isn't liberal arts, it's education in general.
As for gearing higher education toward feeding the workforce rather than enriching society as a whole, let me just say kiss my STEM degree-bearing ass.
