Yesterday, I was just starting to get some acne. In the never ending quest to torture myself, I decided to splash some mouth wash on the appropriate portions of skin this morning. Oddly enough, it seems to have actually worked.

My theory is that the alcohol [or whatever is in there] would cause the skin to dry, which would cause the oils & wax in the pores to dry. If the plugs are dry, then they should not plug as much of the pore as it would have otherwise. Also, if the pore is dry, then there should be less pressure, which should cause less swelling.

1 thing to be cautious of is that it seemed to have reddened my face a little. I would recommend doing it a while before you go out, or dilute it a little bit. I'll try using it @ regular concentration @ night time, & @ a diluted concentration in the morning [if I'm going out]. I washed it off of my face this moring due to the stinging pain, but I'd like to leave it on, to see if there are any long term effects. I'd like to also take measurements of the amount that I use for each square cm of skin & acne.

I'd like to also see if it can help stop exzema. I'm hoping that it can remove a lot of the residues in the skin that could cause eczema.

Any thoughts or experiences?

  • Isn't that the idea behind astringents like Sea Breeze [walgreens.com]? Except they don't have sweeteners and flavorings in them.

Nevertheless, the list of ingredients is damn similar.

    Sea Breeze Ingredients:

    Water , Alcohol Denat. , Glycerin , Benzoic Acid , Camphor 0.66% , Clove Eugenia Caryophyllus) Oil , Eucalyptus Globulus Oil , Fragrance , FD&C Blue #1

    Scope Ingredients:

    Ingredients
    Water , Alcohol 14.3 WT% , Glycerin , Flavor , Polysorbate 80 , Sodium Saccharin , Sodium Benzoate , Cetylpyridinium Chloride , Domiphen Bromide , Benzoic Acid , Blue 1
  • I'm surprised that your mouthwash experiment has worked, and I am interested in learning whether or not long term usage actually helps you.

I've been trying to get my hands on a product called 'Elidel' [elidelinfo.com] but it's currently not available in Canada. No, it's not a mouthwash, but for Eczema (also classified as Atopic Dermatitis) the idea is to keep the skin *not* dry.

Cool. I'll keep you all posted. I believe that eczima can be a real debilitating problem. So, it is an unofficial quest of mine to end it.

That's good that you mention that. I believe that after any residues or stuff has been removed, then the skin needs to replenish its moisture some how. That product might be a good 'tool' to use.

      Thanks for your comments.
    • I have a weird connection with Elidel... the company I work for does the data collection for their marketing campaign. if I hear anything down the line about them getting approved in Canada, I'll let you know... right now you can call 1-877-4-ELIDEL and get general information sent to you, though.
  • I am unfamiliar with the severity of your symptoms. Have you spoken with a dermatologist regarding the issue?

If traditional "over the counter" methods of dealing with acne aren't met with success, perhaps you might want to look into the possibility of acne rosacea. If it is indeed rosacea there are several prescription medications that are excellent in dealing with it. Through the experiences of a close friend, here are a couple that I'm aware of: Dynacin (pill) and Noritate (topical cream).

    • Thanks for the suggestions. I'm in good shape. It's just that I like to nip the problem while it's early. The acne really reddens my skin when does come. I find that it comes rarely, but it does come every now & then. For me, I find that it's because my pillow case, & bed sheets aren't clean, and I'm a messy eater. I make good use of a napkin in restaurants!
