I made devices to light up a little LED or move the needle of a galvanometer only using the electricity harvested from radio waves. They are resonators, like most antennas anyway, which implies that they only harvest around a given frequency, say 100 MHz FM broadcast or 900 MHz cell phone communication. The "snake", intended for FM broadcast waves, has a LED that will light up a little bit even a few kilometers away from an average powerful emitter. It can easily feed a low-power LCD calculator. http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasse...

Submission + - Images of Apollo landing sites soon available

eric.brasseur writes: "The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has entered lunar orbit in perfect shape. From a hight of 50 km it will image the Moon in high resolution. The hardware left by the Apollo missions will be clearly visible. The Soviet automatic probes will also be photographed. Previous best images were made by the Japanese probe Kaguya and showed a white patch where the dust had been blown away by the blast of the LM engine."

I was told Unix systems are very complicated. This delayed my first Linux install for about two years. Then I saw a SuSE release installed by a friend who is not that smart at computers. I had ugly problems running the Microsoft C++ compiler. I remembered the neat C compiler of some university Unix workstations and got out buying a Red Hat release. I had to read to manual to install it and make some trial an error but it was overall quite easy. I installed the X server and ran the KDE 1 graphical interface. Then I rushed to the C++ compiler and... oh in heaven and grace, it accepted all my source code. No bugs, no problems. If something halted, it was always my fault and the solution was clear and immediate. One month later I started using the Qt API and planned that about six months would be necessary to get it under the knee. That same evening, everything I planned to do during those six months was finished and everything was a delight.

Bill Gates Calls for a 'Kinder Capitalism' 601

Strudelkugel writes "The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft's Chairman Bill Gates is going to call for a revision of capitalism. He will argue that the economics that drive much of the world should use market forces to address the needs of poor countries, which he feels are currently being ignored. 'We have to find a way to make the aspects of capitalism that serve wealthier people serve poorer people as well,' Mr. Gates will say in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. 'Key to Mr. Gates's plan will be for businesses to dedicate their top people to poor issues — an approach he feels is more powerful than traditional corporate donations and volunteer work. Governments should set policies and disburse funds to create financial incentives for businesses to improve the lives of the poor, he plans to say. Mr. Gates's argument for the potential profitability of serving the poor is certain to raise skepticism, and some people may point out that poverty became a priority for Mr. Gates only after he'd earned billions building up Microsoft. But Mr. Gates is emphatic that he's not calling for a fundamental change in how capitalism works.'"
