Journal eno2001's Journal: JE COMMUNITY: Slow Death? 24

With the departure of the_mad_poster and my own mutation from T4D into eno2001 as well as the apparent slowing of most of my friend's JEs, it all makes me wonder. Is the /. JE community dying? Has Netcraft confirmed it? I hope not. I know that even I have been much slower to post things on /. in my JEs. A lot of that owes to me being very busy both at home and at work this past year.

Another theory I have is that the fever pitch of JE action seemed to coincide with the 2004 election. As soon as it was all over, I suppose some people dropped off in frequency of posting. It certainly seems to correlate with what I've noticed.

So I post this question for those of you reading... what reasons have you found for posting less frequently to your Slashdot JE?

As of yet, I still haven't found anyplace that is a suitable replacement for /. Nothing that has a good balance of *nix news, science stuff and the occasional book or movie review. Nothing that has an interesting group of people to exchange with. I am definitely using other resources (like Unix.com) but they are no substitute for what /. has historically provided...

  • depends on if I actually have something to write about that people want to read and respond to...

I should get my fat penguinette ass in gear and start writing more food JEs again though...

(H)elix1 used to be prolific. I was a big fan of him and T4D ;-)
Cornelius had to duck out on his entries, when someone at a US Gov site noticed him working there...

  • whenever a bunch of people leave, i tend to come across other new people. it seems to come and go to me. i wish tmp hadn't left, i get a huge kick out of his je's and tended to think more critically before speaking--erm--typing with him around.

i don't always participate--need a break now & then, but i find myself always wanting to come back and there are still a lot of people around. which is good.
    • Yeah, what the ball and chain said. Can't remember how old the T4D uid was, but this journal.pl thing runs in cycles.

FWIW, my posts are inversely proportional to the number of hours I'm working.
  • Hey! Why's everybody getting out the party hats?

    Cheers,

  • I have a tendancy of posting things that I can't really discuss in real life. Work related stuff, political viewpoint stuff. That said, I've also recently been doing more posting using my real name, and my real web site.

However, never the twain shall meet.

Two things I've really noticed are SolemnDragon and bethanie posting a lot less. However I also understand why both have less time to spend here than they used to.

I also miss seing Sol's creative work here such as the twins. I understand why she posts this at her own site now but I still think slashdot is poorer for the lack of it.

We've had some new people come along including janeowit (who's journals I'm greatly enjoying) but things just haven't been the same as they were say around the time of the journal
    • bah.

Mostly, i can't slashdot from work as vigorously as i used to.

Hm. Maybe i should compromise and start posting creative stuff that i don't put on my own site??

*sigh* Yeah, mostly it's just that by the end of the day i'm wiped out- and work is no longer the safe haven that it was.

I'm not gone. Don't count me out.

Didn't say you were gone ... just not spending as much time here as you used to for understandable reasons ... real life sometimes needs to take priority over the virtual world.

Though without the virtual world you wouldn't have met your live-in love monkey. ;-)

  • I try and not add any new friends unless an old one dies off (metaphorically). TMP appears to have really kicked the (metaphorical) bucket this time and "Taking Tiger Mountain" is in my top five so... you, sir, have a new fan!
  • eno2001, you killed Slashdot. Have you no shame? Have you no sense of proportion!?
