Comment Jail != punishment (Score 1) 914

This sentiment is exactly whats wrong with our society. Justice is not the same as retribution and jail is not about punishment. If it were and you were interested in punishing someone who beat their child to death, then the only sensible sentence would be to be slowly beaten to death over the course of several months. But retribution is meaningless, and jail is about rehabilitation. If prolonged time to consider their actions was useful in recovery, then I'd say go for it. But to use it to create a cruel and unusual punishment is just torture, pure and simple.

uh.... It should read "some programmer from the past". Because he would have already executed the code. Also, I want to take a moment to point out that there is no reason to assume that a simulated earth would ever approach the same future, meaning just because the "real" world developed the tech to simulate the entire society of earth and the physical universe in our immediate vicinity, doesn't mean that we (in the simulation) will ever be able to reach that point. Actually, the idea of existing inside of a simulation implies that there are probably upper limits on what we are capable of achieving, because we'd have physical limitations to the computing power available to run our universe. Honestly, its a ridiculous idea.

Comment Not racism per say.... (Score 1) 409

we need a better word for what happened, because its pretty clear that what went down had less to do with his race and more to do with his country and culture. It seems it was less "He's brown, he should expect less" and more "He's from a third-world country. $50k is a large fortune to him. he doesn't need $60k." So less racism and more classism? first-world eliteism?

Its a fair point. The marble only bends "spacetime" in one dimension, because there is only one plastic sheet. In reality the "marble" would bend spacetime in 3 dimensions, plus its interactions with the fabric of spacetime would be dictated by the distortions of other large objects. And besides, if the order of magnitude between the size of the marble and whatever is causing the well is large enough, it probably matches up pretty well.

Germany takes the whole "murdered 6,000,000 jews" thing very seriously and keep close tabs on people who are looking to bring back the nazi party. hell, they don't even allow historical reenactments over there. They treat the whole situation very similarly to a recovering alcoholic - one neo nazi is one too many. I'm not saying that they are "right" and kids will rebel regardless, but they are trying to be responsible in a world where they are a seen as a recovering super-villain.

yea, I'm all for skyping with your kid, but getting a smartphone to skype with your kid is insane. op should buy whoever is the primary caregiver either a tablet w/ webcam or computer with webcam and chat when your child has a session setup by an adult. If you think about it, robots are the things people are pushing as the new "thing". robots that learn to walk, cars that drive themselves, and robot vacuums and lawn mowers. They also aren't very good, for example bipedal movement is exceptionally tricky, the roomba isn't great for more than basic dusting, and selfdriving cars are still untrusted. Miniaturization is what you're mainly going to see, and clunky robots are probably going to make an appearance. he missed some things, but what he predicted is surprisingly realistic.

I really don't get how a bomb can be inhumane. Is there a humane way to bomb someone? does it count as humane if it just drops a building on top of them?
