I downloaded several AAC files from Apple's Music Store, played them through my stereo, and thought they sounded pretty good. I didn't do any A/B comparisons, nor did I compare AACs to uncompressed versions of the same songs using spectrum analysis. I don't have to, because I'm satisfied by what I hear.
What am I listening to these AAC files on? A pair of Klipsch La Scalas, loudspeakers the size of dishwashers that cost more than $2,000 a pair when I bought them back in the early 80s (and I still say they're as good as the current state of the art), driven by an Adcom GFA 545 power amplifier (if I ever turned the volume all the way up I'd melt my windows), which is controlled by an Adcom GFP 555 preamplifier. If AAC files sound good enough through this kind of system to an ex-musician, they'll sound good enough through a pair of high-end computer loudspeakers.
