scramjets or some rocket last stage (hidrogen/oxigen, for example, for ecology's sake) could work.
Why isn't any one working on the unusual?
It's like the automobile, we esentially refine a ludicrous technology that is over a century old, and is in itself a refinement of horse-drawn carriages.
