How Long Should an Open Source Project Support Users? 272

Ubuntu Kitten writes "Since October the community-generated database of cards known to work with Ndiswrapper has been down. This is apparently due to an on-going site redesign, but right now the usual URL simply directs to a stock Sourceforge page. Without the database, the software's usability is severely diminished but this raises an interesting question: Is an open source project obliged to provide support for its users? If so, for how long should the support last? Web servers cost money, especially for popular sites. While developers can sometimes find sponsorship, is it possible to get sponsorship simply for infrastructure and user services?"

ACLU Creates Map of US "Constitution-Free Zone" 979

trackpick points out a recent ACLU initiative to publicize a recent expansion of authority claimed by the Border Patrol to stop and search individuals up to 100 miles from any US border. They have created a map of what they call the US Constitution-Free Zone. "Using data provided by the US Census Bureau, the ACLU has determined that nearly 2/3 of the entire US population (197.4 million people) live within 100 miles of the US land and coastal borders. The government is assuming extraordinary powers to stop and search individuals within this zone. This is not just about the border: This 'Constitution-Free Zone' includes most of the nation's largest metropolitan areas.'"

Hybrids in SUVs & trucks would likely be more practical to consumers and manufacturers.

A hybrid version of a vehicle that already gets good gas mileage in traditional form (like a fuel-sipping Civic) will take longer for the consumer to recoup the additional cost of the hybrid engine. Hybrid versions of low gas mileage traditional vehicles (like trucks & SUV's) would reap benefits much sooner if they can perform proportionally as well as current smaller hybrid vehicles over their traditional counter-parts.

Also, the margins are generally higher for trucks & SUV's; I would see more incentive for manufacturers to sell them regardless of traditional or hybrid powertrains.
