First Light Images From Herschel Satellite Released 35

davecl writes "The first images from the Herschel satellite have been released by ESA. The images are of the galaxy M51 and show a lot of structure and other features never seen before. Coverage of these results can be found on the ESA website and on the Herschel mission blog. There's a lot of work still to be done on tuning the satellite and instruments for optimum performance, but these very early results already show the promise of this mission. I work on this project and can say that these results are really impressive at this early stage!"

Hugh Pickens writes: "When you are pushing 90, have written scores of famous novels, short stories and screenplays like Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, and have fulfilled your goal of taking a simulated ride to Mars, you're allowed to pursue your passions and to hold a grouchy attitude or two. The NY Times reports that among Ray Bradbury's passions, none burn quite as hot as his lifelong enthusiasm for halls of books. "Libraries raised me," Bradbury says. "I don't believe in colleges and universities. I believe in libraries because most students don't have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was during the Depression and we had no money. I couldn't go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years." That's why Bradbury is helping raise $280,000 to keep libraries in Ventura County open. As for the Internet? Don't get him started. "The Internet is a big distraction," Bradbury says. "Yahoo called me eight weeks ago," he said, voice rising. "They wanted to put a book of mine on Yahoo! You know what I told them? 'To hell with you. To hell with you and to hell with the Internet.' Not to be equivocal Bradbury added that, "It's distracting. It's meaningless; it's not real. It's in the air somewhere.""

viktor.91 writes "Sun Microsystems announced three new MySQL products: MySQL 5.4, MySQL Cluster 7.0 and MySQL Enterprise Partner Program for 'Remote DBA' service providers." which showed up in the firehose today next to Glyn Moody's submission where he writes "Michael Widenius, founder and original developer of MySQL, says that most of the leading coders for that project have either left Sun or will be leaving in the wake of Oracle's takeover. To ensure MySQL's survival, he wants to fork from the official version — using his company Monty Program Ab to create what he calls a MySQL "Fedora" project. This raises the larger question of who really owns a commercial open software application: the corporate copyright holders, or the community?"

Agreed. Avast is my current favorite, and i tried all that i could find before settling. AVG 7 was my favorite, but once it went to 8 it slowed my computer startup time down considerably. I like clam AV (it's open source!) but i don't like the fact that it has no active scanner.

Random BedHead Ed writes "Good news everyone! After a five year vanishing act the sci-fi spoof Futurama returned this week with a direct-to-DVD feature. Wired has an article about its return, including the story of the show's origins, a behind the scenes gallery, interviews with creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and some interesting trivia. For example, did you know the ship has an overbite like a Simpson's character? Or that the show's title is taken from an exhibition at the 1939 Worlds Fair?." We just talked about this a bit the other day, too, in reference to a great interview on TVSquad.
