Would you consider this college to have a diverse student body:

White: 33.3%
Asian/Filipino: 41.0%
Chicano/Latino: 14.8%
Black: 2.9%
Other: 7.9% (Includes Native Americans, other groups and those who declined to state.)

???

Bearing in mind that the above numbers do NOT include foreign students enrolled!

Karume James doesn't.

Why is that? Does he consider asians to merely be white people with funny eyes? Are hispanics who have a pale skin color considered to be "white"? Is it that only the number of black people should be counted when determining how "diverse" a community is?

If he's interested in diversity, shouldn't he be interested in the number of people who are NOT like himself (i.e. black), rather then the number who are like himself? Thus from his perspective, as a black person, shouldn't he consider the campus to be overwhelmingly diverse?

Well, I guess we've just deduced that diversity, to Karume, is ONLY a factory of the number of black students and nothing else.

Nice attitude, bud.

  • I'm guessing that the school is UCLA, though, right? When I was at UCSB (U Can Study Buzzed) UCLA was commonly referred to as University of Cacausions Lost among Asians. (If you're curious, and I know you are, USC was University of SPoiled Children;-)

One of the problems that the UC system has had is that their attempt s to generate diversity means student populations in which 70-80 of the class is either White or Asian. Which while good from a minority viewpoint, is really not all that diverse.

    • Shouldn't need to register for that link, but yeah, it's UCLA.

Only 1/3 of the population is white. As for asians, there's not a lot of similarity between a japanese person, a chinese person, a vietnamese person and a filippino. In fact, they're MORE different than are american whites and american blacks.

So that 41% asian probably represents more diversity right there then the remaining 59% of the population combined.

And "Hispanic", of course, comprises all of central america, south america and the caribbe
  • Usually when a school is accused of not having enough diversity, it is because the proportions of various races enrolling / on campus are very diferent from the proportions in the surrounding community. Using some data from the 2000 census [census.gov]: the population of Los Angeles was 11.2% African American compared to 2.9% represented in the student body, the population of Los Angeles was 10.0% Asian compared to 41.0% in the student body.

Hispanic is a really difficult category. In the U.S. census Hispanic is not a
