Comment Re:Old news, slight revision, still broken Hulu. (Score 1) 172

... I can watch the videos, but the player controls are unusable (clicking on them does nothing).

I have this problem too on Hulu and Youtube alike. I found that if I click and hold the middle button on my mouse and click the first button, I can use the controls again. Pretty ugly hack, I know, but it works! What's worse is that this bug comes and goes, and I can't figure out what's causing it. In fullscreen mode, the controls work normally again.

Smart Robot Capable of Hunting For Its Own "Food" 191

coondoggie writes "Ok, maybe this is getting a little too close to bringing Terminator-like robots to life. For starters, eco-friendly engine builder Cyclone Power this week inked a contract from Robotic Technologies, Inc. (RTI) to develop what it calls a beta biomass engine system that will be the heart of RTI's Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR). The purpose of EATR is to develop and demonstrate an autonomous robotic platform able to perform long-range, long-endurance missions without the need for manual or conventional re-fueling — in other words it needs to 'eat.' According to researchers, the EATR system gets its energy by foraging, or what the firms describe as 'engaging in biologically-inspired, organism-like, energy-harvesting behavior which is the equivalent of eating. It can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable.'" We can only hope they don't team up with the Multi-Robot Pursuit System project to "search for and detect a non-cooperative human."

Comment arXiv is not peer reviewed (Score 2, Informative) 684

Along with the other comments here, I would also like to point out that arXiv is _not_ peer reviewed. It's really frustrating the amount of citations from arXiv I've seen lately. People need to take everything from arXiv with a grain of salt. Sure, arXiv is there to spark discussion, but until it ends up in a peer reviewed journal, treat it as hearsay.

Video Game Conditioning Spills Over Into Real Life 232

doug141 writes "Lessons learned in video games may transcend computers, PlayStations and Wiis. New research suggests that virtual worlds sway real-life choices. Twenty-two volunteers who played a cycling game learned to associate one team's jersey with a good flavored drink and another team's jersey with a bad flavored drink. Days later, 3/4 of the subjects avoided the same jersey in a real-world test. Marketers and lawyers will take note."
