Waking up in today's world with a Java 1.4 code base would be one big hangover. Mix in a large helping of early Struts/JSP from the same period and, well, life would suck. Rather then a problem with Java, it's really a code issue; without diligent oversight code gets pretty damn ugly. My day job is dealing with this problem - 10 year old code where 95% of the JSP are made up of Java code instead of tags. Business needs are finally forcing a rewrite. My architecture for the replacement is based on components. Small blocks of code distributed as jars with an expected live of around 2 years. Maybe that''s the lesson Java updates...

Needless to say, I was against health care reform from the start. But, I listened, and thought about it. At some point it occurred to me that it would be nice to separate my health insurance from my employer; changing jobs should not impact the coverage I provide for my family and myself. My current job is with a DoD contractor, which provides plenty of evidence that I wouldn't be happy with the government in charge of health care. If there were a free and open insurance market, one where price levels could be tied to services provided, and costs were not hidden, then buying medical insurance would be similar to buying auto or home insurance. Oh well, it didn't happen.

I think this bill will help, some. I also think more is needed. Getting rid of the pre-existing condition cop out is a big gain. But, we've just provided the insurance companies with millions of new customers, some of whom are young and healthy and won't use their insurance, and we haven't significantly changed the way they do business.

.... one to open the throttle and the other to close it. The idea has been used on motorcycles for many years. The all new BMW S1000 RR has a throttle by wire system -- where the throttle plate position is controlled by a computer in response to the rider's throttle hand -- but the second cable is still connected directly to the throttle plates and will override the computer to close them. This could be done in a cage (car) by putting a little intelligence in the throttle pedal that recognizes when the drivers foot is off the pedal which would cause the pedal to return to full up -- and pull on the second cable. As a side benefit, a sensor in the pedal could be an input to a data recorder, which could provide data about how many of these incidents are caused by driver error.
