Infosys Fined $35M For Illegally Bringing Programmers Into US On Visitor Visas 201

McGruber writes "The U.S. government fined Infosys $35 million after an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department found that the Indian company used inexpensive, easy-to-obtain B-1 visas meant to cover short business visits — instead of harder-to-get H-1B work visas — to bring an unknown number of its employees for long-term stays. The alleged practice enabled Infosys to undercut competitors in bids for programming, accounting and other work performed for clients, according to people close to the investigation. Infosys clients have included Goldman Sachs Group, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. Infosys said in an email that it is talking with the U.S. Attorney's office, 'regarding a civil resolution of the government's investigation into the company's compliance' with employment-record 'I-9 form' requirements and past use of the B-1 visa. A company spokesman, who confirmed a resolution will be announced Wednesday, said Infosys had set aside $35 million to settle the case and cover legal costs. He said the sum was 'a good indication' of the amount involved."

Comment Re:Autonomous vehicles and the housing market (Score 1) 369

With autonomous vehicles will come an increased ability for the local, state, and federal governments to track where and how much a given vehicle travels. The governments will then find it convenient to levy taxes and/or fees accordingly with the amount of destructive damage done to the road by the vehicle, which increases exponentially with vehicle weight. So it is unlikely to be as cost effective in the future as it is now to literally drive your whole house everywhere you go.

Comment How does it kill mold spores? (Score 1) 440

So I looked over the Microzap website and I couldn't find a good explanation of how this microwave technology kills the mold spores other than the vague description:

"The unique MicroZap technology utilizes a combination of thermal and non-thermal effects to destroy bacteria at lower (colder) temperatures, thus creating “cold pasteurization” of fresh foods and eliminates deadly pathogens."

The thermal mechanism seems obvious, but what might be the "non-thermal effect" they are referring to?

Motorola To Hire 300 Android Developers 88

ruphus13 writes "Google's Android is starting to see more industry support. Motorola recently announced plans, despite hardships within the company, to hire 300 Android developers. Quoting: 'A quick search of Motorola's job openings suggests that, indeed, Android is set to become a permanent fixture at Motorola, which has long built Linux-based phones but hitherto used MontaVista's Mobilinux. The goal? Move from an internal development pool of 50 Android-savvy developers to 350. Motorola, recognizing that most developers won't have deep experience with Google Android, is looking for a somewhat general skillset ... Java and Google Android programming experience is listed as 'highly desirable,' but not required.'" T-Mobile has already made plans to use Android as well. Xconomy has a related interview with a member of the MIT team that won a $275,000 prize in the Android Developer Challenge by creating an application to automatically modify a phone's settings depending on its location, which they say "wouldn't even be possible on an iPhone." We've previously discussed the Challenge itself and some of the other winning apps.

Will this screw up when the earths field begins fluctuating when poles being going into reversal again?
Seeing as the force generated is in a direction perpendicular to both the satellite's direction and the magnetic field lines, it really shouldn't have a major effect.

As long as the magnetic field stays at least somewhat parallel to the earth's surface, a lift force will be generated regardless of the field polarity.

Of course, if there is zero magnetic field that means no lift force, but that doesn't mean things immediately fall out of the sky, only the potential to drop a little in orbit until the field picks up again.
