WikiLeaks Publishes Afghan War Secrets 966

A number of readers submitted word on the massive WikiLeaks release of Afghanistan war documents. "The data is provided in CSV and SQL formats, sorted by months, and also was rendered into KML mapping data." WikiLeaks provided the documents in advance to the New York Times, Der Spiegel, and the UK's Guardian — the latter also has up a video tutorial on how to read the logs. From the Times: "A six-year archive of classified military documents... offers an unvarnished, ground-level picture of the war in Afghanistan that is in many respects more grim than the official portrayal. The secret documents... are a daily diary of an American-led force often starved for resources and attention as it struggled against an insurgency that grew larger, better coordinated and more deadly each year. The New York Times, the British newspaper The Guardian, and the German magazine Der Spiegel were given access to the voluminous records several weeks ago on the condition that they not report on the material before Sunday. The documents — some 92,000 reports spanning parts of two administrations from January 2004 through December 2009 — illustrate in mosaic detail why, after the United States has spent almost $300 billion on the war in Afghanistan, the Taliban are stronger than at any time since 2001."

Supreme courts in the India are one of the most "intelligent" and reliable institutions. One of the reasons why this guy will get prosecuted is because he started the community to instigate defamatory statements. His "intent" was to generate these defamatory comments. Actually if it had been just his blog and some random person had made a defamatory statement on his blog (which is general blog, not specifically aimed at defaming a party or a person), the courts would not have held him responsible for that

Indian media especially electronic media has a classic dichotomy. On economy they are right leaning on everything else they are communists. By the way most iconic figures on electronic media are related to communists. Pranab Roy is a relative of Brinda Karath. Vindo Dua is leftist. Burkha Dutt is related again to communist party members and so is Rajdeep Sardesai. So its wrong to say that indian media is "hardly" communist controlled. Electronic media definitely is By the way looks like everyone who doesnt agree with you is a right wing fundamentalist to you.

Discovery of a "Flat" Atom Hailed as Quantum Computing Breakthrough 205

msw writes to tell us that nanoelectronics researchers have discovered a new molecule that could act as a state-manipulable atom due to its unique shape and properties. "Imagine a tiny arsenic atom embedded in a tiny strip of silicon atoms. An electric current is applied. Something strange arises on the surface -- an exotic molecule. On one end is the spherical submerged arsenic atom; on the other end is an 'artificial' flat atom, seemingly 2D, created as an artifact. The pair form an exotic molecule, which has a shared electron, which can be manipulated to be at either end, or in an intermediate quantum state."

I hope you are aware that total budget for ISRO responsible for India's space program is "staggering" Rs 3,148 Cr. That translates into US$900 Million Max. Even if India spends all this money on poverty alleviation program it would result into Rs 60/ Person($1.25) max. Also it will be a gainful exercise to find out how much Indian govt is spending on feeding its poor. Its definately 100 times more than what its spending on space research.

Also India's bid is to be self sufficient so that it doesnt have to pay unreasonable amounts to foreign countries. This space capsule was launched using an indian vehicle called PSLV which also put in orbit 2 satellites from other countries. That itself took care of most of costs associated with this launch

Its very easy to provide simplistic solutions about what other countries should or shouldnt do without living there or seeing the complete picture
