Comment Windows 8 is for the future, not for today (Score 0) 505

I've been using windows 8 for a few months now. I use it on my Macbook and on my Surface (I went to TechEd for work, too cheap to not buy).

What I don't think people realize is Windows 8 is built for the future of computing. Yes you may not have a touch screen right now, but in 1-2 years you probably will, this is where windows 8 shines. I love using it on my surface, I can goto chill mode and just read news, view stocks etc, I dont need to type much etc. However, when I want to work, or get something done I goto the desktop mode, it makes total sense to me.

Windows 8 took me a little bit to get used to, the first 2 days was like "WTF THIS SUCKS" but now, I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with what they did.

Think of it as two different modes. Power User / Get shit done == Desktop, and consume and browse == Tile / Metro. Instead of needing two different devices I can do it on one.

The Start Menu thing.. I really don't understand why people are so pissed, you hit the windows button, you get a full screen menu-- I guess thats kind of annoying but it works well, you start typing and it searches, it's pretty easy.. I mean putting the start menu back in desktop mode is OK, I don't care either way.

One of my co workers bought a touch screen windows laptop that folds into a tablet, and it's a really good experience, I think that's the future of laptops.

Umm... Women in Pakistan are treated as equals. In fact, if you're on a bus and there's a women sitting down, most people will get up to give them a seat. Oh also, Pakistan has had a female Prime Minster. That said, shit there is really fucked up. There's a minority of islamists & uneducated people but MOST of the people are fed up, they're tired of terrorism and they don't want any part of religious extremism.

Man Builds His Own Subway 174

jerryjamesstone writes "Everybody is into rail these days; it is the greenest way to get around next to a bike. Leonid Mulyanchik has been into it for years since before the Berlin Wall fell, since before the first Macintosh, building his own private underground Metro railway system. English-Russia says that he has been doing it with his pension, that it is all legal and approved and that he is still at it. Gizmodo calls it 'Partly the traditional, inspiring, one man against all odds type of persistence, but more the obsessive, borderline insane persistence.'" Installing Linux On ARM-Based Netbooks? 179

An anonymous reader writes "I am sure that many other Slashdotters have noticed an increase in ARM-based netbooks over the past several months. For example, the Augen E-Go. It is a widely touted theory that it is impossible to install Linux on one of these notebooks, replacing the commonly installed Windows CE operating system. The sub-$100 netbooks carry decent specs, including 533MHz ARM processor; 128MB DDR RAM; and a 2GB Flash drive, as well as most expected netbook components (USB, Wi-Fi, etc.). I find it hard to believe that a computer with these specs is impossible to hack and install Linux to, but Google searches have been largely unsuccessful in finding proper information. Do any Slashdot readers have experience in installing ARM Linux distros to these cheap netbooks like this? If so, what distros do they recommend?" (In particular, I wonder if anyone can comment on Ubuntu on ARM.)
It's funny. Laugh.

Man Spends 2,200 Hours Defeating Bejeweled 2 179

An anonymous reader writes "A California steel contractor spent 2,200 total hours over the last three years racking up a high score in Bejeweled 2. He exceeded the 2^31-1 maximum score programmed for the score display, proving that there is, in fact, an end to the game. I suppose congratulations or condolences are in order."

Apple Just Says Yes To iPhone Smoking Game 192

ZosX sends along a puff piece from Wired's Brian X. Chen: "Apple on Monday approved Puff Puff Pass, a $2 game whose objective is to pass a cigarette or pipe around and puff it as many times as you can within a set duration. So much for taking the high road, Apple. The game allows you to choose between smoking a cigarette, a cigar, and a pipe. Then you select the number of people you'd like to light up with (up to five), the amount of time, and a place to smoke (outdoors or indoors). And you're ready to get right on puffing."

Planned Nuclear Reactors Will Destroy Atomic Waste 344

separsons writes "A group of French scientists are developing a nuclear reactor that burns up actinides — highly radioactive uranium isotopes. They estimate that 'the volume of high-level nuclear waste produced by all of France’s 58 reactors over the past 40 years could fit in one Olympic-size swimming pool.' And they're not the only ones trying to eliminate atomic waste: Researchers at the University of Texas in Austin are working on a fusion-fission reactor. The reactor destroys waste by firing streams of neutrons at it, reducing atomic waste by up to 99 percent!"

Fastest (and Most Compact) Stellar Spinner Confirmed 47

gregg writes "HM Cancri has been confirmed as a binary system of two white dwarfs orbiting each other so closely that they complete one orbit every 5.4 minutes; they are separated by a mere 8 Earth diameters. 'These are the burnt-out cinders of stars such as our Sun, and contain a highly condensed form of helium, carbon and oxygen. The two white dwarfs in HM Cancri are so close together that mass is flowing from one star to the other. HM Cancri was first noticed as an X-ray source in 1999, showing a 5.4 minutes periodicity, but for a long time it has remained unclear whether this period also indicated the actual orbital period of the system. It was so short that astronomers were reluctant to accept the possibility without solid proof. '"
