Well, the thing is that diagnostic is much better with newer GCC versions so I like compiling with somewhat recent compiler. I would not want to roll back to 2.95 something. Plus, with C++ it seems like every new version has a new ABI so switching versions is a major PITA.

I thought that work on improving compile times was on its way but from the posted results it looks like that particular snapshot was like 2 times worse than 3.3 (2:35 vs 1:12 for POV-Ray compile, 1:08 vs 0:36 for Lame). Hmm.. I just noticed that results are much better on Pentium box, I wonder why is that... Still GCC 4.0 is again slower than previous versions. That is my gripe - it gets slower and slower with every released version.
