Comment Is There Really a Big Use for This? (Score 1) 205

I'm just wondering if there is really widespread use of this feature? Personally I don't run too much older software but I can see that it might have uses for some businesses that have older versions of propriety software that may need this. But really I am just interested to know if anyone has/knows of some software that requires this to be able to run properly. If so some examples would be appreciated. Also IMO I would choose to use VMWare over VirtualPC any day. In my experience with using a variety of Virtualization solutions, I have become a big fan of not only how well VMWare products run, (speed, stability), but also their support is fantastic. My favorite product is ESX server. I recommend this to any business that requires constant uptime. being able to migrate a virtual machine such as an exchange server to another server almost instantly in the case of hardware failure or other issue with the server, with only a couple second interruption in service is fantastic. Every company owes it to themselves to at least evaluate what ESX server may be able to do for them.

I agree with you about Kaspersky, I've been a big fan of them for a while now. I switched to it after Mcafee's software went down the tubes. (Their version 4.0 and prior were great at the time). Another product that I think is well worth the money even though its not an antivirus is MalwareBytes. Even the free version is fantastic. I have had more success using Malwarebytes to clean up peoples machines than anything else. Plus the small file size and relatively small definitions allow me to keep an updated version on my thumbdrive at all times, which is very useful when someone downloads those damn fake antivirus programs that prevent you from downloading a real Antivirus or Definition files to clean it.

Well I asked why he is still using dial-up because he doesn't state that it is not available in that area. I didn't ask for someone else to speculate why he's using dial-up because what would be the point? Does responding with a dumb/condescending answer make you feel better? Because if this person was in the US they can get Hi-Speed access just about everywhere now, as long as they can see the sky you can get satellite access. But I was looking for a legitimate answer to why he was still using dial-up.

Yeah there are places where you can get connections for that low of a price, but its not really "Hi-Speed" 768k which even though is not wicked fast, it is still a big improvement over 56k. But anyways, there are much more options available now, DSL is available in many more places because of the advancement in equipment that allows access to people who are further away from the main Telecommunication office. But also the availability of Satellite access now allows almost anyone to get a high-speed connection.

Comment Really Dialup? (Score 1) 255

Before even bothering to discuss where to check to see if software is legit or not, my main question is why is this person still using dial-up? It is ridiculous to be using dial-up this day in age to browse the internet or be downloading software. I understand dial-up to be used for verification purposes or other low-data transfer usage, but where Hi-Speed connections can be had for as little as $10 a month, dial-up seems more problematic than its worth.

Comment RAR Compression with Parity Files? (Score 1) 411

I don't know exactly what you are looking for but what about using RAR files to split up the data and using parity files to ensure the data can be restored properly? This way you would avoid having to create a raid array to have enough space to store the files. plus it will limit your chances of accidentally losing the data when trying to recreate the raid array. You could then store these files on whatever media you want (SSD, Blu-ray, HDD, Tapes etc.) Plus this would make it easier to use multiple media sets for redundancy, say store your main copy on a couple of HDD and then have a Blu-ray backup set JIC. Being a Network Engineer myself, I still strongly believe you should be using a tape drive/library for backing up these files as the media will last a long time. Even opting for the cheaper LTO2 drive to save some money and just requiring a few more tapes. Depending on how well your dataset compresses an LTO2 tape will hold up to 400GB(Compressed) and 200GB(Uncompressed). I personally like EMC's Networker product for running backups but since price is an issue you might want to look at a product like Arcserve or an Open Source product instead.

Valve's Battle Against Cheaters 336

wjousts writes "IEEE Spectrum takes a look behind the scenes at Valve's on-going efforts to battle cheaters in online games: 'Cheating is a superserious threat,' says [Steam's lead engineer, John] Cook. 'Cheating is more of a serious threat than piracy.' The company combats this with its own Valve Anti-Cheat System, which a user consents to install in the Steam subscriber agreement. Cook says the software gets around anti-virus programs by handling all the operations that require administrator access to the user's machine. So, how important is preventing cheating? How much privacy are you willing to sacrifice in the interests of a level playing field? 'Valve also looks for changes within the player's computer processor's memory, which might indicate that cheat code is running.'"

Also did anyone else notice the “Garmin” car looked an awful lot like Steve Urkel's first car, his “Beamer”, on “Family Matters”?
