Comment MPG is misleading! Use L / 100km instead ! (Score 1) 1141

I don't understand why anyone (except the car industry) would use MPG as a measurement by fuel efficiency. It's very misleading for most average (i.e. non math understanding) people.

Try this: which of those two options is a better fuel economy (better for the environment)?

1) Getting from 35 to 40 MPG
or
2) Getting from 15 to 17 MPG

You'd be tempted to say #1. 5 against 2, easy!

But, if you look at it from a L per 100km perspective, you get this:

1) is getting from 8.1 L/100km to 7.1 L/100km. (diff. of 1L)

2) is getting from 18.8 L/100km to 16.6 L/100km. (diff. of 2.2L)

So, #2 is actually a better fuel economy...

At the very least, MPG should be GPM if you -really- must go imperial....

I'm in an area of the world that uses metric (read: proper) measurements and I can assure you, I have never in my life seen or heard anyone use decimal points or fractions with Celsius degrees in an everyday context.

Ever got a fever? 37C is the normal body temperature, but between 37.0C and 38.9C, there's a big difference and any decent body thermometer will display the decimal...

Seriously, how hard can it be to give the options in both Fahrenheit and Celsius? Slashdot has a significant international readership, and lumping them all together in a "blah blah" option is not nice. I wouldn't be surprised if that option turned out to be the winner in the end.

It's not our fault they're not American.

I, for one, am very happy that the Celsius option is winning by a long shot ! Maybe that will help them understand...

On another note: Fahrenheits!?! Come on Slashdot, arrive in the 21st century!
