Fuck that. I spent my childhood with a set of World Books; you pick up a lot just flipping through pages and looking for your original intended topic. You can do the same with Wikipedia and opening tabs to read tangential articles later. With AI you jump straight to the "answer" and it isn't even likely to be correct. It kills creativity and curiosity as personal virtues and eliminates the joy of discovery.

Comment BRTs (Score 1) 171

My city recently reworked the local bus service; the main trunkline is now served by segmented BRTs that have limited stops, are never more than 15 minutes away from a stop, and have their own dedicated lane. The remaining routes of the older system are now basically feeders to/from the trunkline. It works really well and getting around without a car is more convenient than ever.

Comment If your parents are on Facebook, get them off (Score 1) 105

Facebook blatantly does nothing to protect elderly people from being targeted by scammers, and a public-facing platform like Facebook is only going to become more dangerous for your folks as they get older, even if they just lurk to keep in touch with their children. There are better solutions for a "digital family photobook" that don't have the rest of the bullshit and danger that Facebook poses for the elderly and digitally illiterate. With AI gen and bot posts flooding the site, it's become a direct metaphor for the Matrix, except instead of turning human life into power, it turns human potential into money for advertisers and bad faith actors on the platform.

Comment Generative AI is the Great Satan (Score 1) 13

I don't touch any of this AI shit being pushed into apps and browsers or willingly provide them training data. The impact of generative AI has been a cultural disaster and it will render many systems that we've come to take for granted, like search engines and social media effectively unusable because of the flood of meaningless drivel spewed out by the truckload from algorithms that don't understand any of the input being given to them. Automation was supposed to free people from labor and let them do the art, science, and leisure. Now we just let the algorithms do that. What I'd really like to know is, what the purpose of all of the AI and bot spam on social media is. Corporations collecting training data from clueless Boomers? Russian cyber trolling? Garden variety scammers?
