Certain web-hosting control panels support multiple links through which you can gain access. The server IP address, the customer domain or the server hostname can be used for logging in and in that case the certificate cannot apply for all hosts. Some of the customers are used to logging in using either of the links and the only solution is to force a redirection which causes a small rebellion. In this case a self-signed certificate saves the day at the expense of browser warning.
