The spread of disinformation is how you end up with 1984. When people begin to believe a lie and find only the information that supports that as opposed to retaining the ability to spot the disinformation you have caused a paradigm where only certain sources are believed without any form hesitancy. You missed the point of 1984 if you believed the issue was censorship. The issue was information was controlled by a few who were politically motivated to make sure you only believe what they wanted you to. And they derided any evidence to the contrary. The 1984 model applies more closely to to the conservative model of fact checking = censorship than is does to the act of fact checking itself.
