It's terribly amusing to watch what I presume are US-based Slashdotters grappling with Quebec language laws in the comments here.

As averse to the whole "Canada as the 51st state" idea as I am (which is to say, like most Canadians, *extremely* adverse), I will admit that there is a small part of me which would *love* to see US politicians try to deal with Quebec.

(if you're American and bored, go look up Quebec and the "Notwithstanding clause" for a bit of entertainment)

How come nobody complains about this with their laptop? I use my MacBook Pro docked at my desk all day, in "clamshell mode". Meaning the lid is closed. If I have to press the power button to turn it off or on, I have to pull it out from under my monitor, minding the short thunderbolt cable that connects it to a dock. Then open it up, press the power button, close it, then put it back in place.

You know what? I've done that once in the past 2 years. It's not a big deal, because I, as Apple says, almost never turn my MacBook off.

So when my new Mac mini arrives, am I going to care that I have to reach around the back and lift it up by 4 mm to press the power button? Sure, maybe on day 1. For 3.5 seconds. Then it won't bother me again until at least 2026.

Not. A. Big. Deal.

I've had the 80% limit set on my iPhone 15 Pro Max since the day I got it. It's currently showing 140 charge cycles (I dual-wield phones and sometimes switch to an Android device for a week or two for dev stuff), and a max battery capacity of 100%.

This is *much* better than I experienced with my iPhone 13 Pro a few years back. So I can't complain at all. And the 80% limit on my Pro Max leaves me with more than enough battery to get through the day, and then some.

Tell me you missed the point of the article, without outright telling me you missed the point of the article.

Hint: you missed the point of the article.

Full explanation: It's not about learning FORTRAN (or other obsolete programming language). The professor just chose FORTRAN because he was quite certain none of his students knew anything about it - ensuring that everybody started from a blank slate. The point is that when presented with a completely foreign topic to learn, the students who retained the most information about it did so because they learned it themselves. The students who used AI to do the work for them were able to recall very little, or in the case of ChatGPT, nothing at all.
