Comment Crime maps display reports, not crimes (Score 0) 123

Crime maps usually display where a crime has been reported - not where it occurred. While this is sometime one-in-the-same, it is not always the case. As a result, many crime maps show hospitals as high crime areas. An anecdote I've heard was a sexual assault that was mapped to a neighborhood. A local resident was concerned and contacted the police. In reality, the assault took place at a distant location, but was reported when the individual returned home. Reporting organizations need to do a better job of identifying the crime location vs. the report location.

This is an insightful post? How? When comments like this get rated a 4 out of 5 on an information website, you know we're headed in the wrong direction. Newspapers aren't important? Who do you think does all the investigation? Bloggers? Commenters? Where are your references? You want to rely on flash-ban books for your information? To protect democracy? Are you kidding? True: press != newspaper - it could be any form However: news organizations, primarily newspapers, are the largest, most professional fact gatherers we have. If we lose them, there will be a huge void to fill. Thank you for giving me a reason to dust off my account.

Comment The death of Free Markets (Score 1) 353

Introduction of regulation is the beginning of the end for entrepreneurs and free markets. It will only be a matter of time before all SL wealth is consolidated in the hands of the few, to the detriment of the many. If these new banks are doing a good job, they will flourish. If not, they will meet their demise. If sanctioned banks are such an ideal prospect, they ought to be able to eliminate these upstarts naturally. If the sanctioning process puts them at a competitive disadvantage, a flaw in that system will have been exposed. The only real reason to ban this activity is if the free market is a Very Bad Thing. In which case, institute tight controls. However, I thought the best thing about SL was supposed to be the freedom to do anything. By contrast, most virtual experiences are very limited, controlled and big-brotherly. This path of action would appear to be a devolution for SL. (cue Whip It)
