Comment What does "technically illegal" mean? (Score 1) 249

So the Post can't bring itself to write that something illegal is illegal. They soften it with "technically illegal". Seems like when I do something technically illegal, everyone else just thinks its plain vanilla regular *illegal*. How Orwellian -- we have a major newspaper watering down their words for fear that the simple truth might cause offense that they'd have to deal with.

Comment Why not delete tabs from the tab menu (Score 1) 128

As soon as too many tabs became a problem (before I encountered the term "tab horder"), I googled for a Firefox tab manager and found various extensions. But I wonder, why can't I pull down Firefox's tab menu, hover over a tab title, and hit Ctrl-d to delete it? With this feature alone I wouldn't need a tab manager, tab folders, etc. etc.

Comment Gotta wonder about the center of gravity (Score 1) 99

The market wants power of course, and I suppose that's what the wheelie represents. But from an engineering perspective a wheelie can happen for a bad reason, and for a not-so-good reason. The bad reason is a high center of gravity, which I'm sure contributes to the Hummer being able to wheelie and also to it being able to roll over, especially in cambered off-road situations. The not-so-good reason is sticky tires, which are bad for tire life but also for efficiency. It seems that just like its predecessors the new Hummer sacrifices our environment for the sake of style -- not a choice that will help endear it to the typical EV buyer, but maybe one that can bring the typical Hummer aficionado into the EV market.

Comment Re: Does $0.001 sound right for a share of PayPal? (Score 1) 315

Yes this is exactly right. It appears that Thiel put stock worth much more than $2000 into the Roth, simply by declaring it to be worth about $2000. Since it was private stock the IRS would have a hard time verifying its value. If the true value of the PayPal stock was, say, $200K then 99% of Thiel's IRA should rightly be subject to taxation.

Comment But 90% of the world only has 10% of the money (Score 1) 44

The market assures that development follows money, not need. The poor spend most of their little money on needs, but the rich spend most of their money on whims. The market has been tilting towards luxury goods since Reagan. Vision AI will follow the same well-funded path, even as its promoters speak of fantastic breakthroughs for all of humanity.
