Why can't you just look at the preprocessor output? This isn't that big of a deal. Or use an IDE like Understand, which will expand macros for you.

Journal Journal: Content the size of my fist, surrounded by ads...

WTF.

I went to read this article, but I found it HARD TO FIND THE CONTENT OF THE DAMN ARTICLE BETWEEN THE ADS ON THE PAGE!

One ad floated gently down from the top of the browser and came to rest in the middle of the screen, awaiting my "close this window" click.

Journal Journal: When things "just work"...

I was sick of my old ball mouse, so I got an optical mouse by Logitech. Very plain vanilla, no frills.

Anticipating that I might dump the old mouse, I had selected a USB input devices option when I recompiled the Linux kernel recently... To my surprise I pluged the damn thing in and it just worked. No configuration, nothing. A cool moment.

That's not exactly what's happening. The article that you referenced is representative of one MF staffer, and it is posted a rebuttal to a different bullish post. From the article:

"While Google is my favorite search engine, its valuation gives me the heebie-jeebies. Since Rick was kind enough to respond to my original article, I thought it was only fair to respond to his, albeit belatedly. Of course, I still think Google is quite overvalued, but Rick does make a persuasive case for the company to be worth every penny."

Microsoft in Talks To Acquire Ebay 235

thatedeguy writes "The NY Post is reporting that Microsoft and Ebay are in talks for the online auction house to join the Microsoft family." That said, the talks aren't going that well at the moment. From the article: " Sources indicate that the talks, while still active, have cooled somewhat in the last two weeks as executives considered antitrust issues. It is unclear what the full impact of yesterday's advertising and search alliance between Yahoo! and eBay will be for talks between MSN and eBay. One source close to the matter suggested the Yahoo-eBay tie-up would not stop Microsoft from pursuing the online auctioneer."

Thats exactly what has been going through my mind reading all of this and especially after reading the referenced blog. This conjures images of the W95 release, people lined up at Wal-Mart like the heayday of cabbage patch dolls. Did the bulk of that population have any idea WHY they were replacing their Windows 3.11 with W95? I find it unlikely. There really wasn't anything developed initially that REQUIRED it (though I must admit, the necessity factor grew at a BLISTERING pace) I myself went from 3.11 to NT4.0, two of the greatest products that MS ever released (qualifier:IMHO). Will the product be released to the masses in a whirlwind release tour with concerts and special guest's, or will it quietly assimilate us through XP attrition?

eBay in 'Buy It Now' Patent Dispute 292

smooth wombat writes "The Office of the Solicitor General of the United States has filed a brief with the Supreme Court, taking the side of MercExchange who is in a patent dispute with eBay over eBays Buy It Now feature. Two lower courts have already upheld MercExchange's patents including finding that eBay had willfully infringed on the Buy It Now patent. Later this month the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments. The Office of Solicitor General is arguing eBay should be barred from using Buy It Now due to the decision of two lower courts that upheld MercExchange's patents. eBay is arguing that infringements should not automatically result in injunctions and shutdowns."

Journal Journal: iPod Alternatives 2

As I mentioned in a past journal entry, I don't have an iPod. I do have a Rio, and so does Kim. I had complained about the lack of OGG support in my Cali, since I have ripped my entire CD collection to the OGG format on my P200 jukebox.

I'm 29 years old, and it has been three weeks since my third open heart surgery. This surgery was to correct a dialated aortic root. As the aortic root was continually enlarging over the past couple of years, it pulled the aortic valve apart, causing significant leakage.

The surgery was performed at the University of Michigan Medical Center by Dr. Edward Bove. Dr. Bove also performed my last two operations.

I got my new cellphone (one word or two?) last week. I've had the old Siemens M55 for about two years, and I decided to see if I could get a new one.

T-Mobile is my carrier, and I was able to get a new phone at the new subscriber price. I really wanted the following in a new phone:

Journal Journal: Mineral

Ever since I saw the Kleeman and Mike animated short film online, I've been meaning to pick up anything by the band Mineral.

After I saw the film late last summer, I downloaded one of the band's songs called "Slower". This song is on my Rio, computer, and Jukebox. Every time I listen to this song, I remind myself to go out and buy the album.

I bought my fiancee Kim a Rio last May for her birthday. I used it when mowing the lawn and going to the gym, the sound quality was good (volume was more than ample for mowing the lawn and bass/treble were well-defined) and it is cool that it has no moving parts! Of course space is limited, but how many songs do I need when I'm mowing the lawn or working out?
The Gimp

Journal Journal: GIMP 2 and gimp-print

I haven't had printing capability with GIMP since I upgraded to GIMP 2.

It turns out that I needed to add a USE flag, "gimpprint", to make.conf, and then 'emerge gimp' one more time.

I also picked up another trick: emerge -pv will do a pretend emerge (which I already knew), but the -v (verbose) option will tell you which USE flags it is looking for.

I'd almost like to have this as a default emerge flag...
