EU About To Grant US Unlimited Access To Banking Data 277

An anonymous reader points out a blog post reporting that on Monday The EU Council is set to give US intelligence services full access to SWIFT banking data, despite a unanimous call by the European Parliament not to do so. "The move of SWIFT the data server to Switzerland would be an excellent opportunity to stop the nearly unlimited access of US authorities on EU bank transactions. But EU justice and interior ministers are apparently keen [on agreeing to] a deal as soon as possible, on 30 November. Why 30 November? Because one day later, on 1 December 2009, the EU’s Lisbon Treaty will be in force and would allow the European Parliament to play a major role in the negotiations of the deal with the US. A deal one day before will be a slap in the face to democracy in the EU. ... [W]hile the US will be able to access EU banking data, no access to US banking data by EU [authorities] is being foreseen."

Real-World Consequences of Social Networking Posts 451

gbulmash sends in a classic Streisand Effect story of a Chicago landlord suing a tenant over a tweet complaining of mold in her apartment. The landlord claims that the tweet caused $50,000 damage to their reputation. If it didn't, then the fallout from their own ill-advised lawsuit surely will. The woman's Twitter account is now gone (possibly on advice of counsel), but the tweet that started it all lives on. And in a similar vein, reader levicivita notes a firing over a political comment on a Facebook page. "Lee Landor, who had been the deputy press secretary to Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer since May, posted comments on her Facebook page criticizing Mr. Gates [Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.] and the president, whom she referred to at one point as 'O-dumb-a.' ... The borough president has accepted Ms. Landor's resignation, effective immediately."

Should've posted them on 4chan. The Public Disclosure of Private Facts thingy has been done on /b/ more than once, but as far as I know nobody has been sued yet. Also, there would have been even more 'epic lulz', from doing it. Don't get me wrong though. I think he got what he deserved. He should be happy for not doing jail time.

There are no "good guys" or "bad guys" in war. There is only perspective. A civilized and educated people would understand this. America is neither.

Well, that seems to be exactly how Americans see things. Some time ago I was watching TV, and there's was this reporter that was asking Americans what they thought about guns and their second amendment rights. I was truely shocked by those people's "good guy, bad guy" mentality. It's curious how they always see themselves as the "good guys" that are fighting the "bad guys", and ironically a big part of the rest of the world sees THEM as the "bad guys".

Submission + - Microsoft Boasts 96% Netbook Penetration

An anonymous reader writes: Citing figures from market research firm NPD, Microsoft says Windows' share of the U.S. netbook market has ballooned from less than 10% in the first half of 2008 to 96% as of February. "The growth of Windows on netbook PCs over the last year has been phenomenal," wrote Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft's in-house Windows blogger, in a post Friday.

Information Week author Paul McDougall notes Microsoft's 8% decline in Windows sales is due to netbooks sporting Linux. How does Redmond make an 80% gain in netbook market share without the sales numbers reflecting that gain?
