Journal dknight's Journal: If you could do ANYTHING with your time, what would you do? 7
Ok, this is coming in the wake of the "What You'll Wish You'd Known" story.
Many people pointed out that, if they had it to do over again, they'd waste MORE time, and try to have more fun, not the other way around.
And then one bright person pointed out that the whole "loving your job" thing is crap, because really most people would prefer to NOT work. Now, obviously, this was controversial, and I dont completely agree with him either, and he got flamed a bit, but he was largely onto something.
Would I do what I do now if I could do anything I wanted with my time? HELL NO. Do I hate my job? Nope. It's an ok job. Not too hard, lotsa time to read slashdot. It pays really well for someone my age (esp. with no college degree).
Ok, so what would I prefer to do for my JOB? Computer Security, CIA agent, acting. However, as I havent exactly gotten any offers for those jobs, its not really feasible. And anyway, those are my choices for favorite JOB. There's still other things I'd rather be doing with my time.
If I could, I'd go to china and study kung fu full time. No distractions, no money worries, nothing else, that's what I'd do.
Why dont I? I'm a materialist. I need money, and I need stuff (I LOVE stuff). And even if I didnt, I'd still have to pay for it. It just wouldnt really be plausible to properly dedicate myself to it the way I'd like to. Could I find a way? probably, but I would have to sacrifice too much.
But really the purpose of this journal entry is to ask you, the readers a question. What would YOU do? What's your dream job, and what is it you would just plain DO with your time, if there was nothing in your way?
