Personally, I haven't the same level of experience in the IT realm as you. I started and finished my IT education almost half a decade after high school. I might have another half decade in the field.

I just moved cities to raise a family and starting over is hard despite my experience. I have questioned my position in this industry, like you. My answer was to sign up for some college courses in the evenings. I will be taking web design which is something that has always interested me as a hobby.

As for starting into a new field as a job, I am unlikely to do so. Bills and responsibility of parenting is too much to allow me to tank my income. Instead I plan to make my new learning experience into a side job and perhaps eventually a full time business.

I suggest finding a hobby that can earn you money on the side. Keep your salary and explore new avenues without rocking the boat. If it becomes interesting enough or profitable, then you can choose to follow an alternate path.

And thats Mr. Play-It-Safe's guide to mid-life career crisis management! ;)

Is a Laser Data Link 1.5 Million Kilometers Feasible? 304

An anonymous reader writes "On the Canary Islands last week, a team from Oerlikon Space demonstrated the feasibility of a laser link across a distance of 1.5 million kilometers for the first time ever. In the future, laser links like this one will be able to transmit data across huge distances through the universe far more rapidly and efficiently than is possible using conventional radio links today."

Air Force to Get "Cyber Sidearms" 81

mlbtaz writes to mention that techs working on Air Force networks will soon be getting "cyber sidearms" to help alert them to potential security breaches. "The tool could be a small piece of software installed on Air Force computers or it could be a simple mechanism for taking a screenshot and relaying it to security experts, said Maj. Gen. William Lord, who will soon take command of the Air Force's provisional Cyber Command. In an interview this week, Lord said service officials have not made a final decision about which technology they will use for the program. "

9 Laws of Physics That Don't Apply in Hollywood 807

Ant writes "Neatorama lists nine laws of physics that don't apply in Hollywood (movies and television/TV shows). In general, Hollywood filmmakers follow the laws of physics because they have no other choice. It's just when they cheat with special effects that people seem to forget how the world really works..."

Using Lasers to Speed Computer Data 85

Carl Bialik from WSJ writes "The start-up Lightfleet has developed an unusual way to use lasers to speed the flow of data inside a computer, hoping to break a bottleneck that can hamper machines using many microprocessors, the Wall Street Journal reports. The company plans to sell servers it predicts will be much more efficient than existing systems in tackling tough computing problems. Tasks could include automatically recognizing a face in a video image or sifting through billions of financial transactions for signs of illegal activity. These machines will attempt to sidestep some of the problems associated with parallel computation by ensuring all processors are connected, all the time."
