i'm not sure you want to lower the barriers for getting books published. i think part of the difficulty in getting them published by any reputable educational company lies with the scrutiny the content must face before the company puts its name on it. open source is by nature an iterative process of continuous improvement. while i personally love and use wikipedia, you still can't use its articles as a reference in a research paper because of the possibility of bias and inaccuracy.

life cycle of a red dwarf is around 100 billion years. trillions of years is out of the question. heck, the universe is only around 15 to 20 billion years old
