Comment Re:Internet Voting: the only thing worse than Mail (Score 1) 23

In Washington State we only have vote by mail. It's works really well. You can drop your ballot off at special ballot boxes (like at libraries or city hall or us mail the ballots. At first they only had mail-in ballots in seattle, other places didn't want to pay for them. Then they noticed that there was a good bit more voting because of the convenience and then they insisted on having mail in voting. Once you do it, it seems stupid to try anything else. You can track if your ballot was received and if your signature was approved. If it was lost then (before the election), you can print out a new ballot and send it in provisionally (with you id etc, they have to know if you already voted). It's the only way to go.

If US students have achieved world domination, why are there such a high demand for H1-B Visa's?

Just because the US might have the best, there are obvious answers to why we have h1-b visas. First, there probably are not enough devs in the us to cover all our needs. Second, we are probably not cheaper than foreign educated people, at least at first. Since there's a massive shortage of dev talent, but probably not a massive shortage of IT, that explains why there's a trend of bringing in cheaper external people for it jobs. There are people outside the us who can be talented devs, but I think because their training is less (in general, not in all cases!) this makes it harder for them to succeed in more demanding dev jobs, but they can do fine in easier jobs.

There is WCG (wide color gamut) and two or three depending on how you look at it hdr schemes. Dolby vision and hdr10 and hdr10+. Don't buy a 4k tv without one or both of these. Looks like hdr10 will won, cause its cheaper. I just bought a 4k tcl roku tv with both schemes. It is awesome. I bought one that was too large though - first world problems.

The cynical view might be that the job of nasa is space exploration, manned and unmanned, along with putting jobs in the towns that powerful senators and reps represent. There might be a few people who are doing useless work but that's not true across the large group of researchers.

At the danger of distracting the conversation, yes, free speech should be supported. The exception to me is if that free speech is saying that someone should be killed or hurt, that's now useful or helpful. Saying you want to kill people who, hurt them, that's what we need to stop. Hopefully without giving myself away, I can say that I'm in a group that people openly said shouldn't be able to exist, vote, live, is a threat to the world, basically should die. Is there any purpose to allowing such speech? And I should say people in my group aren't advocating for anything other than to live our lives, and not be killed, destroyed, lose our voting rights, etc.

Better to have a light-weight single monolith that can move to various interesting places and perform science along the way.

No, because individual rovers cannot move very far or very fast. It takes them years to go a few kms.

It is much better to have a large number of small rovers distributed all around the planet in regions of varying geography.

Best rover is many powerful rovers. But think about how much overhead there is the heat shield and retro rockets. You can't have 60 small ones, cause the rocket overhead would be huge (ie each rover has a rocket and fuel and heatshield to slow down). There's not enough atmosphere to drop a bunch of parachutes at high altitude to distribute them. But maybe there's some possibility of having 2 of them in one landing or a small number.

No the us wasn't riddled with commie spies under every blanket. There were a few. Guess what, we had spies in Russia too. The one that really hurt maybe was the guy that gave the Russians lots of details on how to make nukes. But there weren't spies who were changing our policies to somehow help the Russians. That's a ridiculous lie with no serious evidence - it would be incredible if it were true, but it's not. No one believed capitalism had reached the end, we just crushed the fascists, we were on top of the world. Also, here's something you could consider Mr Scaredy Pants - fear mongering with scare words like "he's a commie, or he's a liberal", those don't convince anyone. I have seen people bugging women (they would call it flirting but it is unwelcome) and making racist comments (then say you are just PC). These things are frequent. Every woman online faces the constant haranguing if they are identifiable. No one bugs me like that because I am presumed to be "normal". The sqlite code of conduct was particularly obtuse because it came from the "christianity is the default and ok with everyone" world.
