I like certification exams for my annual review with my current job. In January I will commit to obtaining/upgrading a certification. It is then recorded on my development plan. Then after completing the certification it is documented and my manager is happy. I completed my goal and showed some initiative towards expanding my technical skills. It is all documented in black in white with my certificate.

Banks and insurance companies. Bank I work for has its own COBOL school.

I live in my RV full time and use Verizon EVDO card while on the road. It works fine as long as there is phone service. If you use a cellular amplifier you can extend the distance you need to be from cell phone towers quite a bit - costs around $200.00 Most RV parks and truck stops have WiFi available, but it usually sucks. Most people I know who have/had satellite on their RV don't like it - too slow and too many issues with it and most now use EVDO cards.
