Comment Linearity is the real problem (Score 2, Insightful) 257

Problem is not in error correction, but actually in linearity of data. Using only 256 pixels you could represent an image brain can interpret. Problem is, brain can not interpret an image form first 256 pixels, as that would probably be a line half long as the image width, consisting of mostly irrelevant data.
If I would want to make a fail proof image, I would split it to squares of, say, 9(3x3) pixels, and than put only central pixel(every 5th px) values in byte stream. Once that is done repeat that for surrounding pixels in the block. In that way, even if part of data is lost, program would have at least one of the pixels in a 9x9 block and it could use one of nearby pixels as a substitute, leaving up to person to try and figure out the data. You could repeat subdivision once again, achieving pseudo random order of bytes.
And this is just a mock up of what could be done to improve data safety in images without increasing the actual file size.
In old days of internet, designers were using images in lower resolution, to lower page loading time, and than gradually exchanging images with higher res versions once those loaded. If it had sense to do it then, maybe we could now use integrated preview images to represent the average sector of pixels in the image, and than reverse calculate missing ones using pixels we have.
This could also work for audio files, and maybe even archives. I know I could still read the book even if every fifth letter was replaced by a incorrect one.

Comment No need to open ports to use TightVNC (Score 1) 454

I also often repair remote computers. TightVNC Server has an option Add New Client. So, say your aunt wants you to connect to her pc: As long as You have ports open, She can type in your IP:Port in "add new client", and voila! You are connected. I also have dynDNS account forwarding myPC.selfip.com to myIP:myPort, So i can simply explain anyone to click add new client and type in my address. Simple as that Cheers

Comment all is relative (Score 1) 642

It's that egocentric way of thinking in movies and such that create some bad ideas in the first place:
1. What if life cycle of an alien specie is 100 000 earth years? Our civilisation would seem like a spark on earth, rather than something really happening there. Or if it was lot faster, it would seem to tham as a landscape... Time perception is relative. It's thing to have in mind when thinking aliens.
2. We are expecting all aliens to see, hear, touch.. etc. But who knows what kind of perception they use to find their way.
3. Think long term: what if peak of our civilization doesn't colide with peak of their civilization? Like now they are at chimp level, and we are peeking. But in 10 000 years we will probably destroy ourself with a war or some meteor will wipe us back to amoeba. Life is cycling process, so why expect civilization to be any different? It IS an extension of life.
Bottom line: I do believe in existence of aliens. I just doubt that we are going to meet them. Or, if we meet them, we probably won't notice them.

Well, if You weren't so hasty to call me an idiot and maybe gave your brain a second to process what I was saying, you would see that that was my point also. I never said that we should decide who should survive. I just said that ALL MUTATIONS ARE RANDOM and some will be beneficial while others are just mistakes. So, let me put that in simple words: say one day you are making coffee and, by mistake you add vanilla flavored sugar to it. You might like it, and repeat it often cos that would add some value to your cup of coffee. But, if instead of vanilla it was a salt you added, or even something toxic, you damn sure wouldn't continue to make it, cos that would make your coffee worst. What i was saying was that we shouldn't make people drink salty coffee just because someone made it by mistake.

Well, i guess, medicine is what happened. In the "good old days" if you were seriously messed up on birth, you would simply die. But now days, doctors can patch you up, so you give birth to more messed up humasn, that will then breed with healthy humans, and eventually create a race where no one is really healthy. That is called backward evolution and is nicely described in Idiocracy ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/ ). Some people would call it inhuman or sick, but in my humble opinion medicine should be limited to fixing injuries and curing viruses and infections, rather than helping non-adapted survive. Life is a game of numbers. Not everyone is meant to win. Just look at complexity of our bodies... there is so many things that can and often do go wrong. Call it God or Evolution... each and every one of us is an experiment... and not all experiments lead to a great discovery... in fact, most of them fail. But, in a world governed by emotions, empathy and cash no one ever cares about real progress. Bottom line: When we started cheating in a game of life, we gave up on evolution. That was the moment we stopped being a specie and started being... a goo?
