Comment Blew up a prototype (Score 4, Funny) 301

Years ago, we were involved in testing a customer's one and only prototype board. (I cannot remember its desired function now). I was not actually included in the testing but thought I'd "help". My work mate was looking for a problem so, even though he had not asked, I had to put my ore in and so, taking up his multi meter, went to measure the 240VAC mains input voltage. But I failed to check the meter and he had last used it to measure on the 10A range! After the flash, when I could see again, there was the board with quite a few tracks blown off the board. Fortunately for me, after a lot of work replacing destroyed traces and parts, I got it going again.

Comment This is a crock! (Score 1) 210

This proposal is quite bogus. As it is, I am charged $0.34 per KWH for the power used, and my solar feed in is credited to me at $0.10 per KWH, so the power company is already making $0.24 per KWH from my power at no cost to them. Now they want to steal my power from me charge me as well!!!! Yes, I would like to install batteries but I cannot afford to do so. This extra charge will only increase the power company profits and as I understand it, here in Australia, they are very profitable as it is. This is just a cynical greedy grab for even more. The power companies have not kept up with the upgrading of the network as they should have and now they want to slug the users who have gone to the effort to reduce their reliance on the network. We should be rewarded, not penalized. As it is, the feed in tariff is to low. I have 10KW here and the power I have fed in over the last few years, and them reselling it, would quite easily be enough for the power company to install batteries here at no cost to me. If they want to "fix" the problem, let them install batteries at the houses to take up the excess. I will not hold my breath for that!

I will add my voice to the chorus of those who are disappointed in the roll-out. We were all going to get a reasonable system of fiber to the premises, but because it was started by the Labor party, the Liberal party just had to muck it up! I'm in the fortunate position of having fiber to my house and am really happy with it. But the Liberal wrecked it for so many people, and it did not save anything in the long run. Once you have the fiber installed, it is a pathway to much higher bandwidth later with changing the equipment on each end, but the mashup of the system our beloved gov. changed to has still got the old copper in use in many places! They should be ashamed of the mess they made of it, and it will cost a lot more to finally fix it later than it would have to do it right first time. A purely short sighted political decision!! Well, We have seen lots of them!

I have never understood why anyone would support Trump. This is yet another of his many times he refuses to take any blame for his own faults but has to find others as a scapegoat. Someone who is so amoral as his long running behaviors has demonstrated is a real danger to his nation, and the world. Please, America, wake up and stop automatically just running on party lines, and look at what damage he is doing. Trump makes America GRATE again!

Comment Batten (Score 2) 16

Our grandson was diagnosed with Late Infantile Batten Disease at around the age of 3. He quite rapidly lost his speech and ability to walk. Then he could not swallow so a PEG tube was put in so he could be fed. By the time he was 6, he only was able to move his legs a little. Not his arms or body at all. And he was on strong palliative care pain killers for severe nerve pain. Shortly after his 6th birthday, he died. I still miss him, 6 years later. In the morning, it is Father's Day (Sunday 1st Sept) here in Australia. Our family if setting up a stand at the local Father's Day Festival. The girls have been knitting small toys and I have been 3D printing little bats and geckos. We give them away, along with notes explaining a bit about Batten Disease. We have never heard of it before our grandson's "adventure". There are only around 35 or so cases here in Australia, so it is not very common, and there is no government funding for research. There has been some progress and I pray that it bears fruit, so, soon, no more families will have to go through this horrible experience.
