X is "good enough"
It's the whole "good enough" bit that's the problem. Windows is "good enough", so people don't switch. Linux will gain momentum when someone builds a desktop that's so brain-dead easy to use that you can't tell you're using a *nix box. Moreover, Linux needs to do better than be content with a better X...Microsoft's looking to make radical changes to the role of the OS (e.g., changing the data store from direct access to the filesystem to a relational SQLServer-lite database).
