NCSU's Fingernail-Size Chip Can Hold 1TB 227

CWmike writes "Engineers from North Carolina State University have created a new fingernail-size chip that can hold 1 trillion bytes (a terabyte) of data. They said their nanostructured Ni-MgO system can store up to 20 high-definition DVDs or 250 million pages of text, 'far exceeding the storage capacities of today's computer memory systems.' Using the process of selective doping, in which an impurity is added to a material whose properties consequently change, the engineers worked at nanoscale and added metal nickel to magnesium oxide, a ceramic. The resulting material contained clusters of nickel atoms no bigger than 10 square nanometers — a pinhead has a diameter of 1 million nanometers. The discovery represents a 90% size reduction compared with today's techniques, and an advancement that could boost computer storage capacity. 'Instead of making a chip that stores 20 gigabytes, you have one that can handle one terabyte, or 50 times more data,' said the team's leader, Jagdish 'Jay' Narayan, director of the National Science Foundation Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures at the university."

So I'm holding back on purchasing one for about the next week or so -- based on Apple's announcements on Monday. -- But I did get to hold a Pre in my hand at the Sprint store -- I have to tell you that the crispness of the screen is incredible -- at first I thought it was a "stupid plastic sample" of the phone with a "photo sticker" representing the screen -- and then the image moved. AMAZING! -- my very next thought was ... wow -- there are a lot of fingerprints on this screen and can the screen be scratched??

Does anyone know what the screen/glass is made of? I know Movado utilizes a sapphire crystal for their watch faces which are truly scratch resistant. I suspect that that beautiful Pre screen image would be considerably disappointing with a big ol' scratch in it. Supposedly iPhone uses a synthetic sapphire crystal on it's screen.

You are definitely correct that we all will die some day. I suppose the concern that I have is the drug industry promoting products that can actually make that happen faster.

Regarding oxygen -- we breathe air -- which contains oxygen. Man was the one who decided to extract it from air and make it stand on it's own. Your points are as valid as mine -- these man made things ARE harmful to us -- the question is will we or can we ever make something that isn't harmful -- so that it's truly a benefit (as we so famously advertise medicine to be.)
