Comment Future monopoly of manufacturing (Score 2, Informative) 36

Once China owns all of the TV manufacturing, they can charge the world whatever prices they want for their TVs and we will pay it. It's really expensive to re-shore this type of manufacturing once you let it go for too long.

Not to mention what these "smart TVs" are phoning home and reporting about you to the mothership.

Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain't no New York Times
But I can shake the metrics, shake 'em like I’m supposed to do
'Cause I got that engagement that all the brands chase
And all the right keywords in all the right places
I see the journalists workin' that AP Style
We know that stuff is boring, let’s make it wild a while
If you got boring facts, just wrap 'em in a lie
'Cause every inch of that headline is perfect from bottom to top

Yeah, my editor she told me, "Don't worry about the truth"
She says, "Readers love a mystery, just give 'em something smooth"
You know I won't be a stickler, a fact-checking silicone doll
So if that's what you're into, then go ahead and move along

No, I'm just playing, I know you think you’re smart

Thank you for this.

Comment Algorithmic or formulaic? (Score 0) 21

This is not new, and predates streaming media.

Entertainment executives have been a fan of formulaic shows/music/news/whatever since forever. If something works well, let's duplicate it! The show isn't an immediate hit, cancel it!

How many good shows have gone on too long because they didn't know how to end it, or wanted to continue to milk the cow. X-Files without Scully and/or Mulder? Sure why not. How about another version of CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, etc. British Invasion/Hair Bands/Glam Metal/Boy Bands/Kpop is big? We have more!

If you want to have fun seeing how many things have been repeated, travel over to the television treasure trove of tropes (https://tvtropes.org/).

New York Times won't publish an article about formulaic media anymore, because no one will click on that. Formulaic is cliche. Substitute "algorithm" for formula and now, you have something that will give you clicks! Gotta milk that algorithm. Welcome to 2020's era media and content.

Comment Hitting Reset on Marketing (Score 0) 57

This allows Intel to hit "reset" on their marketing and move all the work to Accenture. Likely, Accenture is planning on hosting this work off-shore (e.g. India) so they can do it at a lower cost. This allows Intel to move the cost of those workers to a different line on their P&L and can scale up and down the workforce quickly at will. Eventually, once they like the direction of their *new* marketing plan and delivery, they will buy-out Accenture's off-shore operations and bring that back into the company.

Either way, this isn't good for the internal employee culture at Intel. Hopefully they can find a path to survive. Intel has made some good chips in the past. Would hate to see this all become outsourced or sold off.

I find it immensely entertaining when people proclaim they are progressive/conservative/educated with an "open mind" until you hit that One Topic(tm) that becomes non-debatable and all those who dare debate the pro/cons are not only wrong, but complete lunatics for even arguing the opposing view.
