It's not a trap. This looks like a very smart thing for M$. I could see M$ creating an M$ edition of Firefox with deep hooks into Vista's bells and whistles. As far as the web browsing experience, it would do everything that ie can do and would work on all those websites built specifically for ie. It's open source but could only run on vista. It won't really compete with ie since ie is "free". M$ can claim they support OSS, indeed even contribute to OSS. They can claim support for multiple browsers/Firefox. They get the both of worlds, a quality browser that supports m$ locked in content. By inviting mozilla developers, they are probably hoping to get as much as they can out of the OSS community in creating and supporting the m$ edition of Firefox. Whether that could be just a few tips on how to do it, to a more formal agreement of help and an endorsement from mozilla(I doubt this will happen). Best case for m$ would be for mozilla to do most of the work. At worst, m$ does all the work themselves. Either way, they can only gain from it. They get a browser for which they only need to support partially, the community supports the bulk of the code. They get free development, a better product and maybe some OSS goodwill points.
