Speaking from personal experience, the net has
dramatically changed my life. In college it gave
me a chance to display my skills to a wider audience. In grad school, though I was studying
in Europe I could stay in touch on a daily basis
with freinds and family back home. After that,
it made it possible for me to find a job, move
out to the West Coast, and keep contributing to
more than one online community I am a memeber of.
I know if it weren't for the net, I'd almost never
talk to any of my relatives, childhood friends,
college buddies, etc. Without the net, I would
find it vastly harder to travel and work all over
the world. And it has greatly expanded my
potential job opportunities.
When you come right down to it, it is an integral
part of my daily life. It provides the
potential to do great things, and empower
the masses. But like any technology it is only
a tool to make life better, and most people won't
use it the way I have. The the opens doors,
we still have to walk through them.
But that doesn't mean that it hasn't changed
life for us as we know it.

My views may or may not be the views of the
company which pays me to write cool stuff
for linux. But I'd say its changed all of their
lives as well :)
