i was just wondering, what is the difference between compiling software (linux) in /usr and /usr/local.
i know that installing a package in /usr could be a little risky, since the distribution may have installed a different version of the same package, thereby, maybe breaking a few things.
but then i wonder what are the possible advantages of placing software in /usr/local as opposed to /usr
